A fresh landslide today cut off Champhai town in Eastern Mizoram from the rest of the country, while nine kachcha houses of a town in south Mizoram's Lunglei district were swept away by flood, officials said.

A massive landslide near Keifang village snapped road connection with Champhai, a town on Indo-Myanmar border in Champhai district.

State Public Works Department was trying to clear the road and it was expected that it could be declared open for all vehicles by tomorrow, officials said.

However, National Highway 54, considered the lifeline of Mizoram which was blocked at many places due to earlier landslides, was cleared of debris.

Meanwhile, nine kachcha houses - known as Assam type houses - were swept away and 12 other houses were damaged by flood in Mizoram-Bangladesh border Tlabung town in south Mizoram's Lunglei district, officials said.

The flood was triggered by heavy and incessant rains in since Monday.

Though the waters of Khawthlangtuipui river submerged over 350 houses in Tlabung earlier, the situation improved after the heavy rainfall ceased from Wednesday night.

Some people who had been evacuated from submerged buildings in both Tlabung returned after water subsided, but there were many others who could not, officials said.

The death toll rose to five with the recovery of two more bodies in a rain-hit landslide in Ri-Bhoi district today, while a child was killed in a separate landslide in Meghalaya.

While three persons were killed in the landslide at Umiam industrial area yesterday, bodies of two missing women were found this afternoon, SP Ramesh Singh said.

All the five persons belonged to two families, he said.

Nine injured persons were admitted to hospital.

He said the incident took place at around 5 a.m. when the people were asleep inside the makeshift quarters of a sawmill at the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation area.

In another landslide at Mawjrong in East Khasi Hills district one child was killed yesterday, a delayed report said. The parents of the victim escaped with minor injuries, police said.

The incessant rain in the past 48 hours have triggered several landslides in the state causing extensive damage in several roads.

A person was washed away and 2000 people were rendered homeless in floods in Tripura following incessant rains since Sunday, officials said today.

A 75-year-old woman was washed away on Monday when she slipped into Bijoy river at Routkhala village in Sipahijala district, about 20 km from Agartala. Her body is, however, yet to be found, the officials said.

District magistrate of West Tripura, Milin Ramteke said 598 relief camps were opened on Monday in the district and adjacent Sipahijala to provide shelter to 2000 people who were displaced due to the flood.

Chief minister Manik Sarkar reviewed the flood situation last night with his senior colleagues and top government officials and asked the administration to open relief camps in the affected areas.

The camps should be kept open round the clock, the officials said quoting Sarkar.

Tripura State Rifles and officials of Disaster Management were engaged in the rescue operations.

The meteorological department recorded 68 mm rains here in the last 24 hours till 8-30 a.m and forecast rain and thunder showers till Thursday.

Department director Dilip Saha said this month 695 mm rainfall was recorded at the airport here against a normal of 421 mm.

People washed away in rains; security forces rush to the rescue of those stranded in the deluge and land slides
Security personnel rescued over 200 persons who were marooned in parts of west Kemeng district of Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday. They had been cut off in the mountain highways following incessant rains and landslides. One girl was killed and three persons wounded in a landslide near the State capital Itanagar, official reports said on Tuesday.

There has been a slight improvement in the flood situation in the five districts of Assam. However, displaced villagers staying in relief camps are yet to return home. The district administration has imposed prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC along the highway from Bokahat to Jakharbandh near the Kaziranga National Park. This has been done to protect animals which may be driven out of the park by the flood waters.

The flood situation in Manipur and Mizoram has improved considerably, though the sky is still overcast. Twelve persons lost their lives in Mizoram and over 800 houses were destroyed.

Meanwhile, in West Bengal, heavy rainfall and lightning have claimed at least nine lives. Of the nine who died since Monday evening, eight were struck by lightning and one drowned in a pond inundated by heavy showers, official sources said. An upper trough across Bihar, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal is causing heavy rains in Bankura, East and West Burdwan, East and West Midnapore, South and North 24 Parganas and Murshidabad districts, regional Met Director G.K.Das said.

With the flood situation in Assam and Mizoram still grim, officials in other northeastern States are on red alert since water levels in major rivers may increase any time with the rains. As Assam is the source of all goods transported to other northeastern States, the movement of trucks and inter-State buses has been hampered.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh told The Hindu that the government’s long-term plan was to dredge river beds. He said, “As a result of rampant deforestation, there is heavy silting in the mountains and most of the rivers have muddy instead of running water. This will quicken the death of the Loktak lake, the largest freshwater lake in eastern India.” The flood situation in upper Assam has been officially described as “critical”.

Floods and landslides claimed two lives in Assam on Monday – both victims being minor girls – while the overall flood situation in the state continued to remain grim with officials putting the total number of people affected at around 3.55 lakh.

While Dipeeka Barman, a six-year old schoolgirl was killed in a landslide incident at Panikhaiti in the eastern outskirts of Guwahati city early Monday morning, Pallabi Narai, a two-and-a-half year old girl died of drowning in floods in Lakhimpur district. The body of one Mahendra Dekaraja, who was washed away by floods in Kaki in Hojai district on Saturday evening, meanwhile was recovered on Monday.

Dipeeka Barman, a Class 1 student of a Jatiya Vidyalaya at Panikhaiti, a locality in the eastern part of the city, was getting ready for school when earth from the slope of the hill behind their tin-roofed bamboo house came tumbling down, instantly burying her. While Dipeeka died on the way to the hospital, her younger sister fractured one of her legs after she got stuck under the debris. The incident took place at around 7:45 AM on Monday. Today was the last day of school before the summer holidays.

Meanwhile, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration on Monday launched a publicity campaign asking people living in several vulnerable locations on the city’s several hills to shift to safer places in view of possibility of more landslides caused due to the heavy rains. Over 50,000 people have been living in the city’s hills – most of which are either reserved forests or government land – as encroachers, with rampant earth-cutting leading to landslides during the monsoon months.

Brahmaputra above red mark

The water-level of the Brahamputra and Barak, and several of its tributaries registered a rising trend on Monday, with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) putting the number of people affected by floods at 3.55 lakh across 13 districts.

While the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level in Jorhat and Tezpur, it also showed a rising trend in Guwahati. The Barak river in southern Assam was also flowing above the red mark at Badarpurghat near Silchar for the fourth consecutive day on Monday.

Karimganj district remained the worst affected with the SDMA estimates saying over 2. 12 lakh people have been hit by floods there till Monday. In Lakhimpur in eastern Assam, over 92,000 people have been reeling under floods. Altogether about 21,000 people have been shifted to 77 relief camps in the flood-affected districts.

Traffic on the 300-km-long Jammu-Srinagar national highway was suspended this evening after a massive landslide blocked the arterial road and also damaged a bridge in Udhampur district, officials said.

“The landslide struck the national highway, the only all weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, at Morh Passi near Balli Nallah in Udhampur district around 4.33pm, damaging a bridge and blocking the road,” a spokesman of the Traffic department told PTI.

He said men and machinery have been pressed into service and the road is expected to be made traffic worthy by tomorrow evening.

Hundreds of vehicles got stranded in the aftermath of the landslide and efforts are on to shift them to safer places away from the landslide prone-areas, the spokesman said.

A landslide also struck the highway at Makarkot in Ramsu area of Ramban district around 2000 hours on Sunday.

However, the landslide was cleared within one-and-a-half hour and the highway was reopened for traffic late last night, the officials said.

While the light motor vehicles were plying on the highway from both sides today, load carriers and security convoys were not allowed from this side due to one-way restriction for heavy vehicles in view of the ongoing widening and repair work at various patches especially Panthyal in Ramban district.
