French forces in northern Mali have killed a senior commander of the al-Mourabitoun Islamist group who was wanted by the US, a defence ministry spokesman said on Thursday.

The US has offered a $5m (£3.2m) reward for information leading to the arrest of Ahmed al-Tilemsi, who took part in the 2011 kidnapping of two French nationals in Niger and of three aid workers in Algeria later that year.

Tilemsi was a founding member of the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUJWA), which merged with fighters loyal to veteran Islamist leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar to form al-Mourabitoun last year.

“Last night, we launched an operation in the Gao region in coordination with Malian forces,” Colonel Gilles Jarron told reporters in Paris. He added that Tilemsi had been killed and a dozen other Islamists “neutralised”, but did not specify if that meant killed or arrested. :bunny:

MUJWA – Belmokhtar’s men and members of al-Qaida’s north Africa arm, AQIM – formed a loose alliance of fighters that seized northern Mali’s desert regions in 2012.

The militants were scattered by a French offensive in January 2013 but France has kept about 3,200 troops in the Sahara-Sahel region as part of a counter-insurgency force.

An additional 200-400 special forces have a mandate to hunt down leaders of the Islamist groups, which have mounted a resurgence in recent months with a series of attacks that have killed dozens of UN peacekeepers in Mali.

The last of the French hostages held by the al-Qaida-linked militants was freed earlier this week, amid claims of a prisoner swap with his abductors.

WTF are "french" forces doing in mali anyways ?

preserving freedom ?

1 : To push back the terrorists (they were about to take bamako before the french intervention, the president asked us to help them......)
2 : To kill a maximum of terrorists (and leaders) and to prevent their return.

Boring. Next.

You're boring.
Stop with these stupid comments and that mentality of a 4 years old boy,and try to debate correctly and intelligently with members....

the president asked us to help them
is that enough ? to intervene in another country by the request of its ruling dum dum ?

my question was : what kind of interest does france have in mali ?

why don't you leave their people alone ?

of course i'm happy that extremist terrorists are killed , but i'm not happy its carried out by a country whose politicians still live in Colonialism era

There are no french interests in Mali, and the whole region. (Just an uranium exploitation of Areva in Niger,no more.)
The trade between Mali and France is about 10 millions....
Why don't we leave their people alone ?
Even the Malian citizens were so happy to see us,it's like if they saw God,they were screaming everyseconds "vive la frane","merci la france" etc....
We saw a lot of Malians,no one said something wrong, they were all happy, all smiling, even crying,"nous sommes libres". (we're free.)
I think you had to be there to understand and to see their reactions...

WOW !!! 10 million dollars ? WOW !!

10 million dollar is the allowance of a rich kid in LA . 10 million dollar is nothing my friend .

France has nothing to do in mali , and the forces should have been sent by UN , not france .

its just colonialism , admit it
