PARIS – Two Belgian police officers have been briefly detained by their French colleagues as they returned a group of migrants to French soil, an incident that caused tensions between the neighbors.

French authorities in northern France said the two policemen were arrested on Tuesday after they crossed the border near the town of Nieppe. They were transporting 13 migrants.

A spokesman for France's northern department of Nord said in a statement on Thursday that "French authorities have expressed their utter disapproval following this initiative which does not comply with the usual working practices between France and Belgium."

The two police officers were released after being interviewed by French police, while the migrants — including three minors — have been kept in custody for checks.

According to Belgian media, the undocumented migrants were detained Tuesday on Belgian territory.

The country's Office of Foreigners ordered them the same day to leave the country, and Belgian police took the migrants at their request to the Belgian-French border at Nieppe and dropped them off there.

In escorting one group, Belgian police inadvertently drove 50 meters (yards) into French territory.

Georges Aeck, a police captain in the Belgium town of Ypres, said the two Belgian officers drove the migrants back to the border because they "did not want to leave them by the roadside and let them walk to the border."

Vincent Gilles, the president of Belgian police union SLFP, criticized French police for keeping his colleagues at the police station for about four hours without a lawyer or an interpreter.

The belgians claim that their two police officers were arrested, handcuffed, taken to a police station and questionned during 5 hours, without any lawyer or an interperpreter, because the belgians arrested were dutch speakers.

Apparently, they weren't aware that they entered the french territory, and a local called the nearest police station who intercepted their vehicle and taken them to the police station of Armentières. They were considered as human traffickers.

The home minister convoked the belgian ambassador to explain the situation.

A very embarrassing situation for both our countries.... @mike2000 is back

Flemish!

This means war .. Go Belgium, clean this shit :D
Apparently you are unaware half Belgium speaks French, and half speaks Flemish. Belgium is a federal state,

The first Article of the Belgian constitution reads today: 'Belgium is a federal state, composed of communities and regions'.
The concept of 'community' refers to persons that make up a community and the bond that unifies them, namely their language and culture. Belgium sits across the fault line that separates German and Latin cultures. This explains why the country has three official languages: Dutch, French and German. As a result, Belgium today, has three communities: the Flemish Community, the French Community and the German-speaking Community. These communities therefore correspond with the population groups.
The power to make decisions is no longer the exclusive preserve of the federal government and the federal parliament. The leadership of the country is now in the hands of various partners, who independently exercise their authority within their domains.
Majority rule is often superseded by a de facto confederal decision making process where the minority (the French-speakers) enjoy important protections through specialty majorities (2/3 overall and majority in each of the 2 main communities).

Dialects such as Flemish may be quite distant from standard Dutch and not be readily intelligible for other Dutch-speakers.

The serious problem in Belgium between Walons and Flemish is very under-reported in the mainstream media.

Sometimes the situation is so grave that they even refuse to treat each others patients (Flemish refusing Walons and vice versa).

Have already heard about the hatred from none other than Belgians themselves!

Belgium is a classic example of why multi-ethnic countries do not work even under the most ideal conditions.
