Maulvi Faqir Mohammad, former deputy head of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has been released from Kabul jail after eight years. The Afghan government released Maulvi Faqir Mohammad and three others on April 15 this month.
According to media reports, Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security (NDS) arrested Maulvi Faqir Mohammad on February 26, 2013, along with four other accomplices from Nazian District in the border province of Nangarhar, while he was on his way to Pakistan near Torkham. I was going to Tirah Valley. After his arrest, Maulvi Faqir Muhammad remained under interrogation in Bagram Jail.
Syed Rehman, a senior journalist from Afghanistan, told VOA that those released along with Maulvi Faqir Muhammad included Mullah Shahid Omar, Maulvi Turab and Maulvi Hakimullah.
According to him, Maulvi Shahbaz Khan alias Mangal Bagh, who was arrested along with him, died of a disease in a Kabul jail about a year ago.
He said that Maulvi Faqir Mohammad and all those arrested with him belonged to Bajaur, a tribal district of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan. After the death of Maulvi Shahbaz Khan, the last rites were performed in Bajaur.
Syed Rehman says the Afghan government has released Maulvi Faqir Mohammad and three of his associates on bail. After being released on bail, it is being reported that Maulvi Faqir Mohammad along with his associates have gone to their relatives in Shoradtan area in Marawara district of Kunar province of Afghanistan.
Neither the Afghan government nor Pakistani officials have issued an official statement on the release of Faqir Mohammad and his three accomplices.
Who is Maulvi Faqir Muhammad?
Faqir Mohammad, born in 1970, hails from Mamond, an area bordering Afghanistan, and received his early religious education from local madrassas, said a leading Bajaur tribal leader. His teachers include Maulvi Abdul Salam of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), who was assassinated by unknown individuals in March last year.
He added that at the age of 22, Maulvi Faqir Muhammad became part of Maulana Sufi Muhammad's banned Tehreek-e-Nifaz Shariat (TNS). Maulana Sufi Muhammad had started regular protests in 1993 for the implementation of Shariat in Malakand Division. Maulvi Faqir Mohammad was at the forefront of all the protest stages of the movement as well as talks with the government or other people.
According to journalist Mohammad Khurshid, Maulvi Faqir Mohammad's political and military career began with his joining the banned movement.
According to media reports, after the 9/11 attacks in the United States, when Maulana Sufi Muhammad decided to take troops to support the Taliban government against US forces in Afghanistan. Maulvi Faqir Mohammad had done the job of transferring the lashkar members from Bajaur to Afghanistan.
