Thales wins contract to modernise IFF for India’s MiG-29

Thales has been awarded a contract by Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (RSK-MiG) to deliver IFF1 Combined Interrogator Transponder (CIT) and Cryptographic National Secure Mode (NSM), for the retrofit of the MiG-29 multi-role fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force.

The first CIT will be delivered to RSK-MiG in 2010 and the first building block of a comprehensive secure identification capability in India mid-2011.

The IFF CIT equipment chosen in the TSB 2500 family offers a modern digital identification capability, compliant with the NATO Standard MKXA2modes. It will enable Indian Air Force MiG-29 fighter aircraft to be interoperable with western military aircraft and so to avoid friendly fire.

Moreover, the cryptographic mode will offer India a first national secure identification capability for protecting its own assets. According to the contract, Thales will deliver IFF for the whole Indian fleet of 63 MiG-29.

“This MiG-29 IFF retrofit perfectly illustrates the excellence of Thales’s IFF solutions for the modernisation of existing aircraft” said Patrice Caine, Vice President, in charge of RadioCom activities at Thales. “We think that one of Thales’s missions is to provide our customers with solutions that can help them to be more efficient while ensuring a better protection. Thales’s IFF secure solution fully meets this goal”.

I find it weird that the contract was awarded to Thales by Russia's RSK-MIG and not directly by IAF. So, it seems the Russians are seeking French help in upgrading the IAF MiG-29s. Works for IAF, I guess.

By the way, it seems that the Russians and the French are getting a bit cozy nowadays ---

Suddenly we came to know French Deal is on hold ya? The same day news came India is getting its Russian Mig upgraded by the same company and their deal went through. NOW give yourself a fair mind and decide what would an average mind think. Thales hasn't given out any reasons yet but their decision is highly suggestive and points towards Indian lobbing.

India screams even when unarmed UAVs are given to Pakistan and you want to say you were "okay" when Pakistan was getting their fighters more potent with the same company you are settling your deal now? Think some!

Well... OK. I agree that India has got several military projects with France. For example, Scorpene subs, Mirage 2000 upgrade etc. And that does give India some leverage over France. So yes, India can influence France.

But I'm sure that there were several other factors behind the French decision. Can't put the blame solely on India. That's all I'm trying to say.

Reuters report clearly included "uncertainty over finances" as an issue behind the decision.

Besides, the French are smart people. Today, they'll say no to Pakistan and impress India. Tomorrow, after the deal with India is done, they will start selling to Pakistan again. I'm pretty sure India is very well aware of this scenario. So, I don't think India would waste time and effort trying to convince France not to sell military tech to Pakistan.

Ultimately, India, like any other nation, has very little influence over what the French do. France is a fiercely independent nation. It does not even listen to USA, so forget India.

The Mig-29 upgrade of 64 aircraft
the mirage upgrade of 50+ aircraft
and the potential of sale of 126 Dassult Rafael's , and of course cooperation developing the GTRE/SCHEMA Kaveri-2 .

Its simple really, blame your politicians for not seeing the writing on the wall. And not India for securing its interests.

Your BABu's should have seen this coming and taken action before hand.

And mind you the Mig-29 and Mirage deals alone shadow the JF-17 deal. Why would India accept Pakistan getting the same type of avionics, as it own fleet. when India is paying more.

Pakistan got muscled out, simple as that.

Now your air force has to settle for second best, your original choice of French Avionics seems to be in trouble.

No matter what you may get as an alternative, there was a reason France was chosen above all of them in the first place.

Frankly, speaking -IF ,
Indian diplomacy could not stop Russia to sell Engines for JF-17 , how can we stop France from doing so.
Its not in our power - France is a Powerful nation And Has been selling Agousta subs, Mirage-3+Mirage-5 to Pakistan since decades and i read recently PN is also interested in purchasing 3-7 subs from France, if we had any say in world order , we would have stopped Agousta also .

And even if Economy is considered - we are talking about 300 JF17 not some 10-20 machines.
Mirage-2000 upgrade is costing India nearing 40 million per piece, i am sure Pakistan would want similar package of radar and missiles if not less , calculating will give us figure something 10 billion why would France kill it.

There have been no statement from Indian foreign affairs ministry or Defense-ministry or credible people to stop JF-17 upgrade , its just mere speculation of Journos and media.
If you have any statement from INDIAN side , plz post it i would be more than thankful.

Only one objecting to this is US who suspect Technology leak to China.
Even they themselves are selling F16b52 to PAK so its a bit trivial/Double game by them

My understanding is similar to Reuters - That it has something to do with Pricing.
Remember Your Journos have been quoting price of JF-17 approx 17-20 mill , as its biggest advantages. If you add French component there is no way JF-17 will be cheap ( Just see the upgrade price of Indian old Mirages; 40mill per piece and not even a new engine in that , which bring its upgrade price same as 2 Brand-new JF17 ,
Note French system are costly and they rarely compromise on price , adding French system would have made JF17 costly by atleast 70-80% more if not more)
That's reason for Upholding.

You are taking India way too seriously - Our country dosen't have say in Decision of bigger powers like USA+France+UK. If they see a profit they will sell to Pakistan which is by no means a small Defence market
Thinking tht France stooped a deal of billions for mere 10-15mill in total of IFF to MIG29, i mean its hard to believe.

The pakistanis can always buy from china, after all it is top class no?
No stealing of technology/reverse engineering has been done etc. Also it is cheap. why complain?
