NEW DELHI: France has offered to invest EUR 1 billion to revive India's combat jet engine project, proposing a joint development plan that could see the stalled 'Kaveri' gas turbine powering indigenous Tejas fighters by 2020.

The proposal is to use offset credits that would come from the planned Rafale fighter jet deal to revive the indigenous jet engine project, people involved in talks between the Indian defence ministry, the Defence Research & Development Organisation and French companies told ET.

Foreign arms companies that sell equipment to India are mandated to invest a portion of the contract cost in the country's defence and aerospace industry. In the case of the Rafale deal, which India and France are negotiating, the offset obligation is 50% of the cost, which would translate to over EUR 3 billion.

Sources said that since January, several rounds of discussions have taken place between Indian authorities and French company Safran, which developed the M88 engine that powers the Rafale as well as the Shakti engine for Indian advanced light helicopters.


French experts who assessed the Kaveri engine — which was more or less abandoned for aviation use in 2014 due to shortcomings on power —indicated that 25-30% more work would be needed to make it flight-worthy.
According to the deal being offered, India would not need to spend any more developmental money on the project and Safran would take on the investment, committing to make the Kaveri flight-worthy within 18 months. The proposal is to integrate the upgraded Kaveri with the Mk 1 A version of the Light Combat Aircraft by 2020.


The air force is committed to buying at least 80 of the LCA Mk 1 A fighters that will meet higher technical requirements than the version inducted this year. It is currently powered by GE 404 engines.

"The proposal is to have the Kaveri ready for the next version of the LCA that would then boast of an indigenous engine as well. The French are confident that this can be done and are willing to put in money into the project," a person involved in the discussion said.

We should make a deal, if the French decide to make an 5th gen fighter then they should use this Kaveri Engine or the updated ones built with JV with India, and IP rights belonging to both.

Just reviving isnt going to work miracles. I believe they are eyeing some technology in the Kaveri.

Bro it is indian money they r just reinvesting as offset obligation plus KAVERI engine project is indigenously design and developed we can easily export and make variants of it in future

I would be very surprised if US parted with Engine technology!!

US updates jet-engine technology transfer policy with India

WASHINGTON: In a sign of increasing trustworthiness, the US has updated its policy on gas-turbine engine technology transfer to India to expand cooperation in production and design of sensitive jet engine components.

US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter informed Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar of the decision during the latter's visit here.

As a result of this policy update, Carter exuded confidence that the US will be able to expand cooperation in production and design of sensitive jet engine components.

If I am right we have ourselves spent only near 350 million USD on Kaveri till now.

The better way I think to get offsets is to spend on Kaveri ourselves and get France for only Technical help, they make it useable on MK1A, we pay them for it.

And 1 billion EURO is better spent on GIAT/Nexter investing in OFB building Small Arms, Battle Rifles, Assualt Rifles, Modern Anti Aircraft Artillery , smoothbore tank canons, Aircraft canons etc. That is a better option.

Bro we need engines technology badly can't rely on anybody 1 billion € is nothing for that we have to beg borrow or steal by hook or crook and we still have more 2 billions € left so we used that as per ur QUOTE

I think they are being really sneaky and offered this so that they could share less Rafale tech. Instead of spending the full offset proceeds on Rafale related technology they will be diverting 1/3 of the funds on an engine development project to be carried out by one of their own firms.

for 36 jets we dont expect any tot for rafale it will come along with another order but as for engine tech it would be a game changer in coming decade
