SHIVPURI: Four members of a family who have converted to Islam were arrested last night in Madhya Pradesh, hours after they told a court that they had not been forced into adopting another religion. Seven others have been held for questioning.

Tularam Jatav, his son Keshav and relatives Manikram and Makhubhai Jatav were arrested on Wednesday under the state's Freedom of Religion Act, which allows conversions only if the district administration has verified that they are not forced. Those wanting to change their religion have to seek the state's permission.

All four, if found guilty, face two years in jail.

On Tuesday, when the Jatav family went to a district magistrate with affidavits affirming that they were converting willingly, a large group of activists from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal arrived too, and started protesting and chanting slogans. Later, an FIR was filed against the Jatavs and a team was sent to their house.

The VHP and Bajrang Dal are both part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-led pro-Hindu conglomerate that includes the state's ruling BJP.

Officials say the Jatavs appear to have violated the law, as the probe team had learnt that they had switched to Islam months ago without informing the government.

Tularam Jatav reportedly converted to Islam two years ago, but retracted the move to settle a property dispute. Last year, he reportedly converted to Islam again, this time along with his son and two relatives.

Others in their village went to the police on August 28 and alleged that forced conversions were taking place in the family. The Jatavs denied it twice, but yesterday, shortly after they tried to submit affidavits in a court, they were held.

"We have not been forced to convert; we were inspired by the teachings of Islam. This is an unnecessary controversy," said Keshav Jatav, before being taken into custody.

A police team will now investigate the villagers' allegation.

The names mentioned are incorrect. They can't be 'Keshav Jatav' anymore.

In any case, if proved guilty, they will be sentenced. Otherwise not. It's not that the RSS/etc force converted him to Buddhism or Hinduism either.

And Windy - you know we are 'evil'. We know we are 'evil'. So why post this to prove 'what is eternally true'?

Kudos to the police. According to the state’s Freedom of Religion Act, only a person can convert after district administration verifies that it is not forced. Moreover, these people were found guilty of forcing their wives to convert. Nice job by the police. :)

Two dalit youths, who converted to Islam and were also forcing their wives to change their religion, have been booked under the MP Freedom of Religion Act 1968. This is the first ever FIR on forced conversions in the region. The incident was reported from the state's Shivpuri district where Maniram Jatav, 30, and Tularam Jatav, 19, have been booked under Sections 4 and 5 of the Act also known as Madhya Pradesh Dharma Swatantraya Adhinivam.

Maniram then lured Tularam Jatav, a labour for religious conversion, said police. Tularam changed his name to Abdul Kareem in 2013. However, he was thrown out of his home by his family after the conversion. The matter surfaced after he subjected his wife to a month of torture for refusing to accept Islam, said sources. She reported the matter to her family who subsequently approached an organization and got a complaint registered.

Most of the people get converted to get rid of their wives.
Also to deny their wife alimony/property rights. I think this is the case here. Religion was used only as a tool to circumvent the legal process.

You know we don't have any of that. All this is a facade. So why mention this now? Do you start a thread saying - the Sun sets in the West? :azn:

:sarcastic:

Yeah...very nice job by VHP and Bajrang Dal. If the jatavs wanted to convert, let them. VHP only protested the forcible conversion of their wives AFTER they (wives and other family members) approached them for help.

:) No, actually they responded to a distress call on the VHP helpline specifically launched for their benefit.

If you see, the recent cases have all been initiated by the women lodging FIRs. The men have only followed. The society is no longer shunning these women - which is a good sign.
