What's new

Five new universities to be set up in Pakistan in three years

not that Good, we have to raise standards to meet international requirements
the problem lies at the basic level i-e the primary and middle schools where the students gets his foundation. unfortunately at these levels the education methodology is highly based on making the students cram the contents of their textbooks instead of understanding the core concepts and ideas. this leads to a student that is highly incapable of doing research work and relies on plagiarism which ultimately brings standards down all around.
how is the average university in Pakistan? what is the feeling about the education from there?
Most of the time the teachers are highly qualified and competent even motivated but the Labs are subpar and the equipment unavailable or in short supply(most of the time we'd design something on the software but couldn't test it physically due to lack of lab equipment ) ...plus there are very limited opportunities for practical work exposure and internships...career counselling, job advice is scarce...

the standard of english is very low.
that's because, when teaching it, we treat it more like a science rather than a language what with a plethora of mind boggling rules of grammar and pronunciation, no wonder people suck at it...(i failed grammar more than any other subject...my english was saved by harry potter novels ,english movies and rockstar games:lol:)

.
I think you're a bit obsessed with research and professors, even though personally I won't risk doing my bachelors in Pak, I know some people do end up as excellent doctors/engineers with high paying offers from abroad etc.
But yes the standard is falling that I can't deny, even in NUST sometimes laboratory equipment is broken and often the standard of english is very low.

Why is English proficiency of such importance? Can we declare ppl underdogs just based on english lang criteria?

Another 5 avenues for haram khouri. Worst kind of lecturers will be appointed and degrees will be sold. That is all that is going to happen in these 5 new Universities. We have new trend in Pakistan that anything not even worth of being called a College is declared as University. Tuition centers located in rented houses are called School and Colleges. What a wasteland.

Graduates from these Universities cant even write a single grammatically and structurally correct sentence in English or in Urdu let alone a research paper (BTW universities are meant for research and not teaching). This is the standard of so-called Pakistani universities.
Maybe u face this because pakistani education system from bottom up and onwards (starting from basic education) is so flawed.

Our basic schooling system could only produce slave minds and crammers ,who are never taught to think ,argue logically and question things.

agreed 100%...its in no way a measure of intellect or ingenuity. A lot of developed countries use their native languages as medium of education but its the 3rd world where we suffer from such prejudices

I would wish it weren't but when these upper class elite people, the professors and deans and the management make a conscious decision to make english the language of instruction I'd expect them to be good at it.

I'd say bollywood movies, facebook and our useless media are the culprit behind people not knowing basic grammar and being ziddi about their mistakes lol.

B +ve, if any of these 5 universities able to full fill wishes of one guy who wanted to study and didnt had option, then i think goal is achieved.

You teach students at school levels, once you are in college, professors just share knowledge and experinces, individuals have to learn by themselves, no spoon feeding. If faculty is not good, peers are duds, then take help from books and internet.

even at school level research and innovation should be encouraged

What is the one language that unites us around the world?

The government is investing in its kids so that they can in turn invest in Pakistan in the future. How can they do that if they don't speak the language spoken by most humans around the world?

When executives from Microsoft, Google, Dell, Intel, IBM etc. etc arrive in Pakistan because they want to send some jobs here, what language do you think they'll want us to speak?

When a student in Pakistan comes up with an amazing idea and wants to pitch it to someone so they'll invest in him. What language do you think he/she will need to know?

Forget university education, both of you need to be taught some common sense first.

Yes thats why now the education curriculum focuses a lot internal projects that kids prepare. Idea is to put knowledge into practicality so that it gets embeded in deep inside brain instead of just rot learning all the thing.

I dont think every japanese or chinese pitched there innovation, technology and product in english to lure western world.

In my personal humble opinion the Govt. should have also focused on strengthening and improving the affairs of the existing Public Universities in Pakistan as some of the Private (Elite) Institutions are getting back on track slowly.

Some of the following problems if rectified will be a huge investment for the young students and the coming generations to follow:

1. Lack of uniformity in the Educational System
(i.e. Different curriculum e.g. Difference in attitude and thinking of students coming out of Public Institution vs. Deeni Madaris vs. Elite Institutions which creates polarization in the society).
2. Outdated curricula
3. Lack of professional development of teachers
4. System of examination (i.e. to move away from "ratta-fication" to more practical quizzes, exercises and projects)
5. Internal and external influences (i.e. Political and bureaucratic manipulations)
6. Lack of resources (i.e. Labs with latest equipments, Libraries with extensive collection of Books and Journals etc)
7. Policy Implementation
8. Low budgetary allocation for education
9. Corruption

On a positive note...even with such problems we are still producing brilliant engineers, doctors, scholars etc (may be low in number) some of them serving the Country (with their capacity) and some have left the Country. I can tell you that the students (in engineering) who come to US for MS, PHD perform very well.

In denmark, norway, netherlands university education is in their local langs..... how the whole pitching to someone thing has worked for them?

No to me its more abt helping you explore your potentials. You know i feel every individual is bright. The education system hs to be tailored as such that it brings out that bright side of yours, if u are intelligent then it polishes that intelligence,if u are less gifted in that sense , then it motivates you to think critically and intelligently.

I dont think so intelligence is all abt studying science. To me its much more broader in definition. Ur creativity skills at anything anything positive in the world, originality, genuineness...... all is what counts as that near me :ashamed:

Whenever i draw a buck toothed dracula i feel like a genius. *that snobbish face

Projects doesnt mean just science project.
Every subject has its project so that student tries to see the practical applicability of his learning.
And this helps them in identifying there strengths and likeness and provide opportunity to explore the potentials.

Because English is lingua franca of science at-least. Over 80% papers and all 100% tier 1 journals publish articles in no other language but English. To know what is going on in your relevant field, you need to read papers and they are in English. Moreover, science is a communal activity and we get to share our findings as soon as we have gathered enough data to prove or disprove a hypothesis. We simply cant share our data and conclusions based no that if we cant communicate effectively in English. BTW, learning languages other than one's mother tongue has proven to be a surrogate marker of one's intelligence. There was after all a reason why in old times kids were encouraged to learn Arabic and Persian, two lingua franca of their time.

And you may disagree with me but based on my 15+ years of experience as researcher and academician, I can say with 100% confidence that those who are in the field of science and yet resist to learn English are indeed the underdogs and they should do something else.

:agree:

My very point! I dont understand what this showbazi of making NEW THINGS when they cant maintain and manage already existing ones?!
This is not about showbaazi, this about making money. Billions will be needed to setup just the infrastructure and then billion more will be collected in buying third rate equipment and another billions in bribe to give jobs to party -affiliated so-called lecturers and another billions from selling degrees to pathetic yet rich students. It is all about business.

We had a brilliant Professor (of Pharmacology) in Aga Khan University, his name was Professor Ameen Surya; he may still be alive but I lost touch after his retirement some 10 years ago. He used to tell us, the junior faculty, that only way of fixing things in Pakistan is to drop a nuclear bomb on it, raze everything to ground and then build it all over again. He was right, back then we were relatively young and did not use to pay much attention to the words of an old Professor but now I realize he was right.
