Putin has been so smart with the timing. He waited until the rebels were hated by the western world due to their atrocities (specially them bombing historical ruins, because it spoiled white people's tourist destinations) and then waited some more until there were mass influx of Syrians to Europe.

The west public WANTS Syria war to end. Look at the online comments, Europe is happy about what Putin is doing.

If this drags on for very long, the goodwill for Putin will soon disappear so he needs to act decisive and fast.
