India and Japan will be holding their first ever bilateral naval exercise in China's backyard on June 9-10. The exercise comes as India is warming up to Japan despite China fretting over New Delhi's this Look East policy.

The decision to hold a bilateral exercise was taken at Defence Minister A K Antony to Japan last year in November.

(Update - The Indian Navy's flotilla consists of newly inducted stealth frigate INS Shivalik, destroyer INS Rana, tanker INS Shakti and missile corvette INS Karmuk. These four are presently on two-month long deployment to countries around South East Asia and have already paid port calls at Singapore and Vietnam. They are presently conducting exercise with South Korean counterparts and on their return journey from Japan, they would also be visiting Shanghai in China and Malaysia.

The exercise is significant as both the countries have decided to take their bilateral defence ties ahead despite concerns raised by China. India has been treading this path cautiously. So much so that it decided against making the Malabar naval exercise a multi-lateral war game including Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force after China registered a strong protest against the perceived grouping against it.

The decision to hold its first bilateral exercise was taken during Defence Minister AK Antony’s visit to Japan as both New Delhi and Tokyo asserted the need for “freedom of navigation and maintaining the security of Seal Lanes of Communication (SLOCS)”.

China has been watching this warming up of defence ties between the two countries, as China had Japan have disputes in the maritime domain like the ownership of the East China Sea islands. The islands are controlled by Japan, but also claimed by China. Relations between China and Japan hit a low point after Japanese coast guards arrested a fishing boat captain near the Senkaku islands in September 2010 following a collision. The prized interest in the region seems to be the gas reserves near Okinawa island.

In fact, in the face of an assertive China in South China Sea, India has also sought to send a strong message by developing stronger ties with Vietnam and Japan. In Japan Antony had said: “India supports freedom of Navigation in international waters and the rights of passage in accordance with accepted principles of international law, including the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea [UNCLOS]. These principles should be respected by all.”)

Very nice! About time Japan moves on without asking US consent for everything.

Wow, a Island much closer to Japan and China are claiming that to?

This is getting funnier by the day.

Actually it is because of US that Japan has come closer to India, also there is tense atmosphere in Japan about the China rise & growing south China sea dispute, Japan finds only India which can counter China in the region, wonder if ASEAN & other east Asian nations are seeing in India as a Messiah (savior) against the Chinese :)

Atleast the Chinese are not saying that Japan is part of China, how sweet of them....

you sir need a reality check as far as the bold part is concerned . The messiah and saviour is USA . India is a friend and potential ally nothing more .

I agree with you, i just dramatized it a bit :) but you have to agree of late India has assume importance in east Asian nations be it Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Myanmar etc. US no doubt is there savior but India has jumped to the second spot.

LOL, in an article about Indo-Japan exercise, the word " China" is used more often than either country. :woot:

Someone is surely obsessed.

Big fan of Japan and it's culture one country we can learn alot from.

Awesome, good to see India reaching out to its neighbors Japan is a very disciplined and professional military, its about time these two nations work together, I know Japan loves India, but the military ties have been lagging behind their trade and business ties, good to see things moving forward with the two armed forces.

It wil increase India's counter against china... & CAN put a dot for Chinese domination:cheesy::undecided:

We should also look to have joint exercises with China. What harm can it do.

New Delhi: India and Japan will hold their first-ever maritime exercise starting on Saturday off the coast of Tokyo there. "Two destroyers, one maritime patrol aircraft and a helicopter of the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) will participate in the exercise whereas INS Rana, INS Shivalik, INS Karmukh and fleet tanker INS Shakti will represent India," the Navy said.

The four ships entered Tokyo after visiting Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines and South Korea and their three-day stay there coincides with commemoration of 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan, they said.

The four ships of the Eastern Fleet under the command of Rear Admiral P Ajit Kumar, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, are on a sustained operational deployment in South China Sea and North West Pacific.

On completion of the exercise with Japan, the warships will be visiting Beijing and Port Kelang in Malaysia around the middle of June.

Eastern Naval Commander Vice Admiral Anil Chopra will also be visiting Tokyo to witness the first Japan India Maritime Exercise (JIMEX).

The government has been deploying Navy warships on in the East in keeping with India's 'Look East' policy to strengthen military ties with the countries of this strategically important region.
