Initially due to buy 131 fighters, Italy has already reduced its planned offtake to 90 because of financial constraints, but Renzi’s new coalition government, which took office on Feb. 19, plans a wide-ranging defense review that could further cut F-35 procurement. Renzi’s party, the reformed leftist Partito Democratico (PD), of which Pinotti also is a member, has in the past often criticized the F-35’s cost, and questioned whether it is suited to Italy’s needs.

Italy will probably end up with a total of 45 F35's.

It goes to waste on a spoiled population who now thinks that they're untouchable.In reality the world's still a jungle,humans are still predatory animals and basically everybody else besides Euros are arming themselves like Armaggedon is around the corner.The fools will pay one day if they don't amend their foolish ways.

I think in the end they will increase back. Because there is no real alternative to F-35.

That's the problem with the European Armies. Planning a big number of planes,the costs increase,then can't afford them,and cut heavily the orders.
(I hope we won't end up with only 180 Rafale and go for 225-280 as planned. I wish our next president really care for our armed forces )

I think in the end they will increase back. Because there is no real alternative to F-35.

Italy is next Greece with high debt and budget deficit but they keep increasing defense budget. Italy with aging population and high social costs must control is spending and 90 F-35 are to much for Italy due to bad economy.
