NEW DELHI: Three policemen were killed in a militant ambush at Ashipora area in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district.

Militants attacked a police party when they were on a patrolling duty.

"Three policemen -- one head constable and two constables -- were killed in a militant attack at Ashipora in Shopian district," a police officer said.

He said the slain policemen were unarmed and had gone to the village for investigating a crime when militants opened fire on them.

This is second militant attack on policemen within hours in Kashmir Valley.

Earlier in the day, ultras shot at and critically injured a police officer in Pattan area of Baramulla district.

Sub Inspector Ghulam Mustafa was shot at and injured by two pistol-borne militants in a bus which was on its way to Pattan, a police official said.

The driver of the bus drove the bus to a local police post where the cops shifted their injured colleague to hospital, he said.

Srinagar: Two jawans have been killed in a fierce encounter that is currently underway between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district.

The encounter began at around 7:30 am, Thursday, at Kunzer village (earlier reported as Hardushoora village) in Tangmarg town after the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, in a joint operation, cordoned off the area following inputs on presence of at least two militants.

The militants started firing after the security forces cordoned off the village and closed in on the house where they were believed to be hiding.

The security forces have sealed all exit points of the village to ensure the militants do not manage to flee.

While a jawan belonging to the J&K Police's Special Operations Group died during the gunbattle, the other - from the Indian Army – succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Another jawan of the Army and a civilian also sustained injuries during the exchange of fire. The civilian is reported to be critical.

Militant attack in J&K, Shopian district - The Hindu
On a day when Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed called Kashmir “a peaceful place like any other State” while inaugurating the tulip garden in Srinagar, militants struck thrice in three hours killing three policemen and injuring a police officer and a civilian on Monday.

“It was a bad day for the police on Monday as we lost three of our personnel in militant attacks,” Director-General of Police K. Rajendra told The Hindu. “We are looking into the incidents.”

Mr. Rajendra said even though the attacks happened on the same day, they did not seem to be coordinated or part of a larger plan.

According to the police, three of their personnel — head constable Mushtaq Ahmad and constables Shabir Hussain and Nazeer Ahmad Wani — were killed in Shopian in south Kashmir when militants attacked the passenger vehicle they were travelling in.

The militants, wearing Army fatigues, stopped the vehicle around 1.20 p.m. at Ashipora in Shopian and ordered the three policemen to step out. The vehicle was also carrying civilian passengers and the militants checked the identity cards of the policemen before shooting them.

Senior police officers said the three cops were returning from a neighbouring village where they had gone for a routine investigation. They were unarmed at the time of their death.

Around an hour before the attack in Shopian, militants shot at a police officer travelling in a local bus on the Baramulla highway in Pattan.

“One of our sub-inspectors, Ghulam Mustafa, of the armed police was shot at by two militants. They boarded the same bus that Mustafa was travelling in and shot him,” police spokesperson Manoj Pandita said.

In the third incident, unidentified gunmen shot at a former militant, Rafiq Ahmad, at the Tral bus stand in south Kashmir around 2.45 p.m. Ahmad is said to be stable.

SRINAGAR: Army today said there were lessons to be learnt from yesterday's militant attacks in Kashmir that claimed lives of three policemen, but dismissed suggestions that militancy in the Valley was resurging.

Though it admitted that activity in the militant launching pads across the LoC has increased.

"There are lessons which we learn from such incidents... The various agencies will investigate it so that the people behind these attacks are brought to book," General Officer Commanding of 15 Corps Lt General Subrata Saha told reporters on the sidelines of a function.

He said the policemen were unarmed and attending to a normal civil case when the militants attacked them.

"We offer our deep condolences to the families of these brave cops," he said.

Replying to a question, Lt Gen Saha said the spurt in militant attacks cannot be termed as resurgence or revival of militancy in the Valley.

"It would be resurgence of militancy had it come to zero," he added.

Asked about revocation of the controversial AFSPA from Kashmir, the Army officer said the matter was being discussed by the state government and the Centre.

"Let them decide on it... we will do our job," he said. Lt Gen Saha said there were around 200 militants active in the Valley but intelligence inputs suggest that activity in the launching pads across the Line of Control has increased.

"The upper heights along the LoC are still covered by snow but it has started melting in lower reaches. We have to be more vigilant along the LoC to thwart any attempts of infiltration.

"According to inputs, there has been a typical increase seen at this time of the year in the number of people at launch pads," he said.

3 BSF jawans hurt in cross-border firing in Punjab - The Times of India
Apr 11, 2015, 11.12 AM IST

AMRITSAR: In a rare incident on international border with Pakistan in Punjab, three Border Security Force (BSF) personals were injured during an unprovoked firing from Pakistan on Saturday early morning.

BSF deputy inspector general RPS Jaswal informed TOI that unprovoked firing from Pakistan near Daoke village in Amritsar sector had injured three BSF jawan's. Daoke village is surrounded by Pakistan on three sides.

Those injured are Constable Rakesh Kumar, resident of Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan, constable Nagendra, resident of Alwar, Rajsthan and constable/driver Mahendra Boro, resident of Kamrup district of Asam.

DIG informed that Rakesh Kumar sustained gun shot wound on left thigh and a lacerated wound on wrist while constable Nagendra Kumar and Mahendra Bora sustained minor splinter injuries.

Giving details of the incident Jaswal informed that the incident happened at around 12.30am on Saturday during shifting of duty of BSF's patrolling party. He said as the new patrolling staffs was going to replace the BSF personals in Tata 407 vehicle they were hit by a burst from Pakistan side in which three jawan's were injured.

"We have so far recovered 16 shells of AK 47 rifle and presume more than twenty shots were fired but search operation is going on," said the DIG.

He said the preliminary investigations revealed that the shots were fired by Pak smugglers and not by Pak Rangers.

In recent past on March 28th and 29th BSF had shot dead three Pak smugglers in two smuggling bids and had recovered a total of 36 kilogram heroin. In one of the incident on March 29th, Pak smugglers had opened fire on BSF with AK 47 rile.

"Since Pak smugglers knows that they would be confronted by BSF so this time they came well prepared and opened fire at BSF personals in panicky," he said adding that BSF had not recovered any contraband so far.

Following the incident, BSF's company commandant held a flag meeting with his counterparts of Pak Rangers to lodge protest. "We will also beholding a commander level meeting to protest against the firing from Pak side" he said.
