Today, the World celebrates #Fibonacci day.

"Fibonacci sequence is nature's code. It is in everything from flowers to storm systems to the shape of galaxies"- they said, crediting Mr. Fibonacci for this "discovery" Yet, they failed to acknowledge their very source. Thread (1)

As a student, I was quite fascinated by the Fibonacci treatise. Specifically, I was working on its closed form expression and its relation to Golden Ratio. I brought a copy of Fibonacci's book "Liber Abaci" to see how the master himself derived it. His introduction SHOCKED me

In the introduction to his book, Fibonacci (c. 13th century CE) makes the following revelations 1) "I am the son of an official working in Bugia, Algeria". 2) There was a colony of Indian Merchants in that city. 3) "It was there that I was introduced to Indian Mathematics".

Fibonacci further says- " I loved Indian Mathematics to such an extent above all others that I completely devoted myself to it" "I was also introduced to Greek, Arabic & Egyptian Math" "But I found ALL of them, EVEN Pythagoras, to be erroneous compared to Indian Mathematics"

Fibonacci further says: "For this reason, basing my book COMPLETELY on Indian methods and applying myself with greatest attention to it, but not without adding something of my own thought, I forced myself to compose this book. I demonstrated everything with proof"

Finally, Fibonacci says: " In my book, I have published the doctrine of Mathematics completely according to the Method of Indians. I have COMPLETELY adopted the (Mathematical) Method of Indians because it is the MOST effective"

Thus, in his book, Fibonacci does NOT refer to #Fibonacci Series as "Fibonacci Series" Rather, he simply calls it "Indian Series". Unlike many other Europeans, Fibonacci was NOT a plagiarist. He clearly mentioned his source and acknowledged his credit to ancient Indians.

Fibonacci's introduction makes it clear that he considered himself "Indian Mathematician" insomuch as he adhered to Indian Mathematical Methodology and contributed to it. The real name of the so called "Fibonacci Series" is "Indian Series". This comes from the horse's mouth !

So far as the so called "Fibonacci Series" is concerned, Fibonacci was only TRANSLATING the Sutras of Pingala (c.3rd century CE) and his commentator Virahanka who derived "Fibonacci Series" several hundreds of years before Fibonacci was even born

I was very shocked reading Fibonacci's introduction. Why are these facts kept concealed? A more important question. Why should it be called 'Fibonacci series' when Fibonacci himself does not claim to have discovered it and simply acknowledges Indian Mathematics as his source?

The precepts of Pythagoras and Euclid were forgotten in early middle ages and revived only later. Yet, the credit always goes to Pythagoras and Euclid. Never to the later day Mathematicians who revived their works. Why is Pingala never extended the same courtesy? I wonder why!

Fibonacci was NOT a European Mathematician, except by flesh and blood. He explicitly rejected the European methodology of Mathematics. He denounced even the path of Pythagoras as "erroneous". He followed footsteps of exemplary Vaidika Mathematicians like Pingala and Virahanka

Fibonacci does not describe his book as "European Mathematics". He explicitly describes his book as " treatise on Indian Mathematical methods". As such, it is hard to even consider him a "European Mathematician". He followed the footsteps of Vaidika Sanskritic Mathematicians

I am reluctant to use a word like 'Eurocentrist'. I do not want to judge a whole civilization. But in this case atleast, I do believe such a factor is at play. Voluntarily or involuntarily, ancient Indian mathematicians do not get the international recognition they truly deserve

true indology is a hindutva anti islamic RSS type account, i think his previous account was banned by the twitter, another one was banned as well.

but it is true what is stated here

Fibonacci number History
So here you agree with what true indology, hindutva anti islamic RSS type account says. Okay, we can live with that.

Mathematics is nothing without its implementation into technology @Suriya
That's why inspite of so much mathematics we were a bullock cart civilization...Indians and the subcontinent should have invented the Internal Combustion Engine and space rockets by 1000 AD, when they were sitting on so much mathematics and so much good quality Wootz steel.....Mathematics is just dick measuring contest unless you can parlay that into engineering and technology...To think of it even the Greeks and Romans should have perfected the Scientific Method by 300 AD and should have peopled Mars by 900 AD

Umm I don't think acknowledging Pingala as the original source of these mathematical theories has anything to do with validating Hindutva. Let's leave it at that.

suggesting that indians were capable of inventing a technology which postdated the given era by 900 years is a folly, secondly being good in mathematics doesnt mean being good in mechanics and mechanical engineering, i am not aware on any treatise written by an indian on mechanics except probably the bhoja's treatise mentioning automation.

The first commercially successful internal combustion engine was created by Étienne Lenoir around 1859[1] and the first modern internal combustion engine was created in 1876 by Nikolaus Otto (see Otto engine).

^ weren't pingala and panini from shatila and peshawar respectively, therefore ancient pakistanis.....yet more bharati theft
Excellent point. As usual, modern Hindutva tries to lay claim to Pakistan's heritage, pretending all non-Muslims in the subcontinent were gangadeshis.

Every acheivement in ancient India is automatically ascribed to a brahmin and then to modern india by indians. No exceptions. If anything looks old and some sort of achievement then the person who made it is instantly turned in to brahmin by indian state and it claims it as its own achievement.

Indians were always very poor in mechanical understanding...You can see this even now as Indians are regularly winning Fields Medal whenver it is handed out.. AKS Primality Theorem is perhaps the greatest achievement of post-Independence India...But mechanical wheels and lack of them is something that had been noted by Babur and by Delhi Sultanate itself...Mechanical understanding of nature matters a lot.....Indian affinity towards mathematics probably results from Indian religious mileu of Vedic Hinduism,Buddhism,Jainism where a lot of stress is given on totally abstract concepts...History of Indian mathematics probably has its orgins in the stages of Meditative absorption of the Shramana traditions (Buddhism,Jainism,Ajivika,Kesin,Yoga)

The first four stages of Rupa Jhanas (mundane meditation)

First Jhana: Pleasure
Second Jhana: Rapture
Third Jhana: equanimity
Fourth Jhana: purity of mindfulness

Now comes the Four Formless Jhanas

1) Realm of Infinite Space
2) Realm of Infinite Consciousness
3) Realm of Nothingness
4) Realm of neither Perception nor Non Perception

Beyond all of this:

Nirodha Sampatti: cessation of perception feelings, consciousness

It is this rich history of dealing with such highly abstract concepts and dealing with fundamental paradox of emptiness that laid the foundation of Indian mathematics which continued as an unbroken tradition till 16th century..Then of course the whole thing was revived by Mathematical Rockstar Ramanujum

of all the significant people of Vedic Hinduism Panini and Patanjali (the grammarian and not the yoga sutra one) come from Gandhara..Rest I fear not and of course rumour has it Chanakya also comes from Taxila
