What's new

Fact Book of Azerbaijani Armed Forces

.
A squadron F-16s, 3-4 Milgem class corvettes, 200 Altays.
I think Army(Land Forces) is already really strong. to understand it, we can compare it with a country like Iran, and we would see that's more modernized, less in quantity, and overall equal or even better. with the new batch of T-90s and purchase of some Altays, as they start to be mass produced, it would get even more stronger than what we need :)
About Navy, it is already good as well, but as you said, some more warships needs to be purchased.
About Air Force, that's my main concern. 1 more squadron is not enough nor cost efficient if we decide to buy from western sources. For Air Force, we need a couple of EA-18Gs for electronic warfare, a pair of E-2C for AWACS, a few C-130 or more ilyushins for transport, a couple of P-8 Poseidon as Maritime patrol aircrafts, at least 6 squadron(12 units each) of a 4++ generation fighter like Eurofighter Tranche III, and have a futuristic programs for buying 5th generations like TFX, F-35, or PAKFA.
Air defense is also already fine.

.
Looks good.

i thought the relationship between Azerbaijan and Russia is cold.

Well, Azerbaijan has good relations with all countries, except for Armenia and the ones who don't wanna have a good relation with us(1 country in this category comes to my mind ;) ). You can see that many stuff are bought from ex-soviets(Russia, Belarus, Ukraine), also some other stuff bought from Israel, South Africa, ... and some engines bought from USA. In non military part, we have extensive cooperation with EU and USA, such as Southern Gas Corridor, and also Nuclear research cooperations and military satellites with France. I think it is a wise policy.

Excellent work mate.
Thanks!

I thought it would be good to have a fact book and summary on Azerbaijani Armed Forces, equipments and strengths. These data are gathered to the best of my knowledge and they may be corrections needed, and some equipments will be definitely upgraded by time. Let me or the turkish mod, @Kaan , know about necessary changes, so we can fix them.

A summary of Azerbaijani Tanks:

1) 94 T-90S tanks

ВЕДОМОСТИ - Россия вооружает Азербайджан
T-90 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the deal with Russia, there was an option to order 94 more T-90 tanks, in which it seems that this second batch would be delivered as well.
News.Az - 100 T-90S tanks to be delivered to Azerbaijan in early 2015

2) 400+ T-72 Tanks
View attachment 119827
Based on wikipedia, we have 542-636 T-72A, T-72B and T-72 Aslan tanks.
T-72 operators and variants - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Around 100 of T-72 tanks are upgraded to the Aslan Standard. It was done by a 54 million dollar contract with Elbit.
In fact, Azerbaijan received about 300 T-72 tanks after collapse of Soviet Union. 153 T-72s were bought from Belarus in two separate deals, 62 T-72s were bought from Russia, and 48 T-72s were bought from Ukraine.
During Karabagh war, 178 T-72s lost and 23 T-72s captured. Overall the wikipedia’s statistics make sense if we exclude the tanks lost/captured during karabagh war.
Multiple countries including Russia, have proposed to upgrade the rest of T-72 fleet as well.

3) ~100 T-55 tanks, 150 units bought from Ukraine

4) There was some news about purchasing T-80U and T-84 by Azerbaijan, but, in fact, Azerbaijan purchased T-90S instead of these two Ukrainian made tanks.

5) It seems that Azerbaijan is interested in buying Altay tank from Turkey, after starting its mass production in Turkey.

The naval aviation is almost non existent
only includes 3 KA-32A

Coast Guard is a separate force under the command of Border Guards
recently bought 6 Saar 62 and 6 Shaldag Mk V patrol boats
with a possible order for Saar 72 (probably why Barak-8 was bought in the first place)

Well, about T-90s, I was not sure if the deal has been about 94 or 100 tanks. Even the link that I have posted says the deal is for 100 tanks. But, some other credible sources say that the deal has been for 94 tanks. So, I preferred to mention what "SIPRI Arms Transfers Database" is mentioning.
For Cobra, and Lynx, data added ;) Thanks
For more modifications, please contact me via messages ;) Thanks :)
@Kaan Can you open a PM for us? Thanks

Impressive array of equipment. The only thing I would like to add is to keep an eye on Chinese equipment as well. As their jet engines mature, they will become another cost effective supplier, like the former Soviet bloc countries.

Well, to be honest, I am more in favor of american products as far as air force is concerned. Eurofighter, and PAKFA are exempt from this general statement, though. :)
As far as China is concerned, I do agree that they are progressing really fast, and it can be a game changer in arms market in future.

Impressive collection.

If Azerbaijan wishes to go for 5th Gen air craft, then it might be better off looking at China. No air-force can afford to go all-5th-Gen. So, there has to be a 4th gen work-horse and a top-dog 5th Gen. IMO JF-17 & J-31 combo would be a pair that would be a good complement to each other and take care of any and all air-borne threats at a cost that can not be matched. Of course, you may not agree with this @rmi5 , but this could be the easiest and most cost-effective route to air-force modernization.
