China's women's swimmer Fu Yuanhui has created a sensation online not just by winning the bronze medal in the 100m backstroke competition, but also by her facial expressions during the post-semifinal interview with China Central Television (CCTV) on Monday.

China's women's swimmer Fu Yuanhui has created a sensation online not just by winning the bronze medal in the 100m backstroke competition, but also by her facial expressions during the post-semifinal interview with China Central Television (CCTV) on Monday.

Fu swam into the women's 100m backstroke final with 58.95 seconds in the semifinal, setting her personal best in the game. When the CCTV reporter informed her about the lap time, Fu's eyes suddenly widened and said: "I am very satisfied with my performance and I thought it was 59 seconds."

When asked whether she held back for the final, Fu replied, "No, I utilized my 'prehistorical' power." What she meant was that she had spared no efforts in the semifinal.

Since then, the so-called "prehistorical power" has gone viral and become a new internet meme. The phrase originates from a Chinese fantasy drama "The journey of Flower" or "Hua Qian Gu", and its English translation first appeared on the subtitles of CCTV news channel.

Meanwhile, her facial expressions have been widely shared among Chinese social media. Many internet users have named the 20-year-old swimmer as the new generation of "Wang Hong", or internet celebrity. On August 8, her latest post on her Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like social media platform, has gained more than 900,000 "likes" and 160,000 comments.

In the just-concluded women's 100m backstroke final, Fu Yuanhui once again outdid her personal best performance with 58.76 seconds and tied for the bronze.

"It is probably my short arms to blame. Since I utilized the 'prehistorical' yesterday, my strength dried," Fu said with her unique humor, as her performance was only 0.01 second behind the second place.

She did not know she nailed a bronze until being interviewed by CCTV Sport! :p:

F: I am out of strength now.....
J: you are only 0.01 second from the second.
F: Maybe my forearm is too short.

(From 0:40)
F: Though I don't get a medal....
J: You get third!
F: The third ya?!
J: You don't know, you don't know until now?
F: (look around) oh....then, I am quite good....

(start the regular after-winning-medal speech)

Thank you Fu Yuanhui!
You are not just an excellent swimmer, a model of younger Chinese generations, but also bring us so much joy amid this over politicalised sport event.

Good to see China rise to the occasion. Winning medals at the Olympics is a sign of a confident and rising nation.
China won the first gold medal in 1984 when China returned to Olympics after more than 3 decades of absence....
What's behind Olympics is more important, people's awareness of doing sport on a regular base, the increase of average life expectancy, sport infrastructure.......

She is really really being herself, at the press conference in Rio.
China is in love with her!

She said: I think nobody will love my type, too strong taste?

Can't agree more, to the gold itself, I hope Chinese athlete can be more confident and relaxed, for country with 1.4 billion population, first or second in medal ranking is normal, glad that China is on the right route, we are patient, we are peaceful people, of course, some don't believe that, whatever, tea for friend, bullet for enemy, that is also a kind of confidence, say it peacefully:-)

No, on the contrary, the most famous sportsmen in Team China so far include several who has never won a medal in Olympics. How to treat sportsmen/women without any medal indicates a nation'a maturity. I haven't read any malignant comments towards some shooters who rank the first globally but failed in the first round. One media published a report titled "•••••only gets bronze" ignited all Chinese netizens.

And if you read this thread carefully, she was famous long before Olympics. And she was very excited to be told her performance by the journalist because she broke the Asian record. But at that time, she did not know she made to Top 3. She enjoyed this game no matter she won or not and no matter which level of medal she got. Most Chinese also feel the same way, unlike the unhealthy sentiment 10 years ago. And more and more netizens took their initiative to make apology to what they have said about Liu Xiang during the 2008 Beijing games when he quitted the game.

From now on, if anybody tells you that Chinese Olympic athletes would be shot or jailed for failing to win a medal, you know he is a brainwashed idiot. :cheesy:
North Korea? I also don't believe many of South Korean media's fabricated reports.
