Measures to end the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir and split the state into two union territories were "a clear assault on democracy", actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan said, as the government pushed the moves through parliament on Monday.

"It is extremely regressive and autocratic. Article 370 and 35A have a genesis. Any change has to be in a consultative manner," Mr Haasan said, who launched his party Makkal Needhi Maiam or MNM last year in Tamil Nadu.

Joining an opposition chorus of accusations that the government had bulldozed the decisions without consulting the opposition, allowing enough discussion in parliament or even time to scrutinise the bills before they were put to vote, the MNM chief lashed out at the manner in which the opposition was "shut by force".

The centre on Monday moved to revoke special constitutional privileges given to Jammu and Kashmir, thereby scrapping its semi-autonomous status, and divide the Muslim-majority state into two federally administered regions.

While the government said the goal was to fully integrating the region with the rest of country and counter terrorism, opposition parties led by the Congress said it will have far-reaching political and social consequences and can trigger unrest in the state. Opposition parties called it a "murder of democracy".

Opposing the Bill, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi said only one community was targeted in terror investigations, and asked Shah why the NIA had not filed appeals against the acquittal of those accused in Hindutva terror cases. “NIA is not appealing because the victims are Muslims,” he said.

“Owaisi Saheb is unaware that action has been taken even against Tamil organisations involved in terror activities… When we make such arguments, we boost the morale of terrorists,” replied Shah.

As a whole indians living in southern parts are much better than northern Indians. I am saying this on the basis of personal experience. Met two guys from northen India one from dehli and another from some where from haryana. It was always difficult to have adiscussion with them. They were well educated but always acted like sanghies. Right now three indian guys living next door. Two from bengal and one from haiderabad. We chat about almost every thing and never had a heated argument.

The protestors also criticised the stand taken by parties like the AAP, AIADMK, BSP and YSRCP.

Armed with placards and shouting slogans against the BJP, a crowd of protestors gathered at Bengaluru’s Town Hall against the Presidential order on Article 370 that withdrew the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir.

In a joint statement, students, lawyers and activists, said, “We stand with the people of Jammu and Kashmir in these dark times. We urge all the people of India to fight these illegal amendments, to fight to preserve our constitution which Babasaheb Ambedkar fought to give us”.

The gathering, which was peaceful, accused the BJP and the RSS of running a “fascist regime” and staging a “coup against the Constitution”. Calling it a “murder of democracy,” they called the “stealthy and illegal manner” in which the government of India has moved to amend the Constitution “shocking and condemnable”.
“The entire population of a state has been cut off from the country through brute force and illegal means. Parliament is being rushed into discussing and voting on a constitutional amendment in two hours. Is this any way to conduct parliament proceedings? Is this the democracy our forefathers fought for?” the joint statement said.

It added, “Article 370 is a permanent – not temporary – provision of the Constitution that assures Jammu and Kashmir autonomy. Article 370 is nothing but a constitutional recognition of the conditions mentioned in the Instrument of Accession that the ruler of Kashmir signed with the Government of India in 1948. It reflects the contractual rights and obligations of two parties. Scrapping the Article without consulting the Jammu and Kashmir constituent assembly is equivalent of going back on our word. It is cheating the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

They further said the authors of the Constitution were cognizant of the fact that the document accords Jammu and Kashmir an exceptional status and it was free of any doubt.

They cited the address made by N Gopalaswami Ayyangar, the chief author of Article 370, to the Constituent Assembly on October 17, 1949: “Kashmir’s conditions are… special and require special treatment. It is one of our commitments to the people and the Government of Kashmir, that in matters outside the scope of the Instrument of Accession no additions would be made, except with the consent of the Constituent Assembly which may be called in the state for the purpose of framing its Constitution.”

Other than the BJP and its allies in the NDA, the protestors also criticised the stand taken by other parties like the AAP, AIADMK, BSP and YSRCP which helped in passing of the Bill. The protestors dispersed just minutes before the Rajya Sabha passed the bill to reorganise Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.

Iknow that aouth and north Indians have same sentiments about Kashmir. Just saying that in my personal experience I found that northern can not hide their hate for muslims and their prjudice against Kashmiri. Where as southern people dont usually hate muslims as the other side does. Its my experience with a very small number of Indians I encountered. Just a few days back saw a video where some Muslim women in UP were leaving their homes and running away to other parts of the country. They said that their husbands and most of the men in their families were arrested by police and with no one to protect them, extremist hindues were making their life a hell and then I spent next few hours in deep depression.
