WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A new hypersonic weapon developed by the U.S. military exploded shortly after lift-off from an Alaska test facility during a long-awaited flight test early Monday, the Pentagon said.
No one was injured in the incident, which occurred shortly after 4 a.m. EDT (0800 GMT) at the Kodiak Launch Complex in Alaska, said Maureen Schumann, spokeswoman for the U.S. Defense Department.
"The weapon exploded during takeoff and fell back down the range complex," Schumann said.
The weapon was developed by Sandia National Laboratory and the U.S. Army, as part of the military's "Conventional Prompt Global Strike" technology development program which is seeking to build a weapon that can destroy targets anywhere on earth within an hour of getting data and permission to launch.
Schumann said officials from the program, the U.S. Army, Navy and Missile Defense Agency were conducting an extensive investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Thank you SCMP, now see what you have done to your US master, and you are our third artillery force.:rofl::rofl:

third artillery force = the US lobby in China (Chinese liberals, HK/TW media, etc)

Every time they used to bash China and her success, then sh1t will happen to their US master.

This has became a freaking curse.

And a big 'F' to SCMP. First, they spread the lie about the failure of our HGV, then fabricating the false rumor about the hypersonic submarine.

They are trying everything to make us look bad.

Such is life at the cutting edge of technology. The accident will be studied and the information learned will be used to make the next iteration will be better.

IIRC, recent chinese tests of HTV was also a fail. Photos posted of exploded vehicle were removed forcibly.

Just for clarification the test was intentionally aborted due to an anomaly detected. It did not explode unexpectedly. Fortunately, the AHW has already produced a successful flight in 2011. The recent failure of Chinas glide vehicle and now this prove hypersonics are very difficult to master.

Well then, technically, the United States was the only to successfully observe this , then. Best of luck , as always, to the United States.

It wasn't the hypersonic part just the booster it was riding on that had a problem causing the abort self-destruct sequence.

"It came back down on the range complex," she said. "Fortunately, no people on the ground were injured. There was damage, but I'm not sure of the extent of it at this time." -- Maureen Schumann

looks like the range complex was destroyed

I take it you speak from extensive personal experience in rocket and missile testing ? Or more like from a reading comprehension problem.

It is not that difficult to find public information about the Kodiak Launch Complex...

Alaska Aerospace Corporation
KLC is situated on 3,717 acres of state owned land, and AAC has authority during launch missions to limit public access to an additional 7,000 acres to assure public safety and security.
Three thousands seven hundreds acres equals to 15 sq/km. Do you know how large an area that is ?

So when the spokesman said 'It came back down on the range complex', it mean the rocket's flight did not take it beyond the range's borders and it came down in the same area.

The complex was destroyed.

Where is it supposed to bomb? China? cause it wouldn't be russia !
