In a major diplomatic victory for India, the EU Parliament will not vote on resolution on CAA on Thursday.
The pro-India group prevailed over the pro-Pakistan group in the European Parliament on Wednesday to postpone this voting, ET has leant. The Parliament heard resolution on Wednesday. The voting could now happen in March.
Strenuous efforts of outgoing British Member of European Parliament Shaffaq Mohammad to have a Resolution passed by the European Parliament against India on the penultimate day before Brexit did not bear fruits, ET has learnt.
ET was the first to report that Shaffaq was brain behind the EU Parliament resolution.
“CAA is a matter internal to India and has been adopted through a due process through democratic means. We expect that our perspectives in this matter will be understood by all objective and fair-minded MEPs,” sources told ET.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit Brussels for a key meeting with EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) on February 17 for brainstorming among other issues on CAA.
FAC plays critical role in foreign affairs decision making of EU. The summit will chart roadmap for India-EU collaboration in several areas including technology transfer, FDI, migration and security partnership and connectivity initiatives. EU is increasingly looking at India to rebalance Chinese initiatives in the continent. But a trade deal is challenging, quipped persons familiar with the issue.
Close to 600 lawmakers in the 751-member European Parliament (EP) moved six resolutions against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The six draft resolutions moved by several groups have coalesced into a single joint motion resolution which was discussed in the EP. However, EP resolutions are not binding on EU commission
