The US military budget has largely been focused on fighting wars in the Middle East over the last 15+ years. It's only within the last couple of years the Pentagon has reoriented our defense strategy to high end competition. That's now being reflected in our budgets.

I remember a time when USA leaded the defense tech but now the new stuff always shows up on the east rather than the west. The recent example is a rail gun which china is about to field and USA is still researching.

Regarding the budget USA is still focused on the middle east and it is allocating a lot of funds there. $3.2 billion goes to Israel every year and the list goes on. USA is not cutting any thing from middle east.

Is this a joke? The US military is the most capable in human history. It's able to project power in any part of the world and sustain those operations for years on end.

This article is just stating the US has the necessary funds to advance our technological superiority in the face of sustained investments by our competitors.

My friend if USA is sustaining a war for years is not a plus point but it shows that USA is not being able to win a war. Look at Afghanistan it is now exactly the same old Vietnam for USA. Russia is back in action and playing the same game it did with Vietcong. Syria resulted in a disgrace for USA and Yemen is a Humanitarian crises created by USA. Only thing Trump has done is have a meeting with Kim in Singapore and yet what has USA gained from that meeting? It is results that count. I am not doubting the US potential but the decisions of leadership it is not enough money to counter China. You only take in account the announced budget of China not the actual working budget. The cost of production and research is 70% less in China. The gun that USA makes in $10 China makes in $2. So reality is different that what news says.

China has made heavy investments for years trying to offset US military superiority.

The US is just getting started. Now that our defense strategy is focused on near peer competitors the appropriate funds are now being allocated to maintain our technological superiority. That's why Selva stated we have the funds required to do so.

You do understand this level of investment will be over many years and in the multi trillions of dollars?
