Engine delivery problems delay Indian jet trainer programme

Trefor Moss JDW Asia-Pacific Editor - London

India's intermediate jet trainer (IJT) programme is facing delays caused by the late delivery of its Russian engine.

Sources at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which is developing the HJT-36 Sitara aircraft, told The Hindu newspaper that the Russian NPO-Saturn AL-551 engine, scheduled to arrive in November 2007, was yet to be delivered.

The 2007/8 delivery date for the IJT - already deferred from the original deadline of 2005/06 - is now unlikely to be met.

Two IJT prototypes have flown using the French Snecma Larzac 04-H20 engine. However, HAL opted for the more powerful Russian engine for the 12 limited series production aircraft ordered so far by the Indian Air Force (IAF). The IAF ultimately plans to order around 225 of the aircraft to replace its fleet of HJT-16 Kiran trainers.
