New Delhi: The Kashmir dispute needs to be resolved to ensure "viable peace and stability in the region", Pakistan's High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit has said.

Basit spoke about the "importance of resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute" at an Iftar gathering here, a statement from the Pakistan High Commission said.

Basit said the meeting between Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan and Narendra Modi of India May 27 provided "a rare opportunity to get the bilateral dialogue process back on track and address all the bilateral disputes on the basis of mutual respect and mutual interest".

Basit said Sharif's vision of "security for development and development for security," which encompassed bilateral, regional and international dimensions, was the best way forward.

Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid here, led the prayers on the occasion.

A collective prayer was made for peace, especially for "the oppressed people living under foreign occupation", the statement said.

* Kashmir becomes an independant country
* Pak-India give up hostility, open up borders.

Thats what will ensure enduring peace. Kashmiris would have to work hard to get cookies instead of getting it for free.

Problem is that due to religion kashmir will invariably graviate towards pakistan so we won't take a risk,,,thats as frank as anyone can be here

Is Afghanistan leaning to Pakistan?

Why do we need 'sarrogate states' when we can loosen border control between two largest S.Asian economies and military powers?

Germany and France have picked up things after killing 50 million people, how many do we need to kill before learning the same lesson, which otherwise we can just copy paste?

@Sidak

Won't work. Main under current in Kashmir issue is humaniterian not territorial. There are hundreds of thousands of families kep apart from their loved ones by LoC.

We can learn a great dea' from E and West German crisis. Both were occupied by rival superpowers much like Kashmir, while the Germans suffered.

Germany is now united and friendly to both Russia and EU/US.

Giving up Germany also saved the world from a Full Scale Thermoneuclear exchange. No Cuban missile crisis has taken place since the German reunification.

Everyone has much to gain from peace and coop. It would also make it easy for me to track you down for a dinner and Russian lessons. ;)

and Pakistan will integrate with India. Trade, tourism XYZ. ;)

Kashmiris won't join Pakistan, just like Afghans didn't.

Wrong analogy, because W Germany was an independent country during the cold war, and the east was a Soviet puppet state. In the case of Kashmir, both pieces are a part of either India or Pak. Neither India nor Pak will want to simply give up a state that is part of their country.

East Germany rejoined with W Germany only because the main country, Soviet Union, ceased to exist. If India and Pak cease to exist, then maybe Kashmir can become an independent country. But otherwise, neither India nor Pak will let it happen.

U see the danger is that all 5 rivers of punjab flow from the kashmir,,,so we will never want to take any risk doe to this reason too.
Kashmir may remain independent or may also integrate with pakistan,,who knows??

Its risky so we will not take any chances

In other words, hand over Kashmir to Pakistan!

'Foreign occupation'?? :woot: Was he talking about the US of A in Afghanistan? Or Israel's 'occupation' of Palestinian territories? Or Bosnia and Kosovo?

@janon

Dear Janon. Both parts were occupied. Both parties had tactical nukes placed in E&W Germany.

The purpose wasn't to get an exact example to go by. The purpose was to highlight the importance of learning lessons from other parts of the world for the problems we face.

Best solution for Pakistan and India is to 'neutralize' Kashmir, both sides!

I agree its the best solution but as already stated by me,,the issue of rivers trumps everything,we just cannot risk drought in whole punjab,haryana and rajasthan even though the chances will be too less.

Still its a risk and most importantly,we are in a position of strength right now,,why should we negotiate??
Thats how militaries think

For peace in Kashmir, Pakistan needs to stop her "MORAL SUPPORT" to Kashmiris, say NO to ARMED struggle. Let there be a decade of violence free peace in Kashmir, then we can talk about taking things forward. We need to see a genuine effort first from Pakistani side to even take such suggestions at it's face value.
