CAIRO: Egyptian prosecutors are probing new complaints against popular satirist Bassem Youssef, this time for “insulting Pakistan” and “spreading atheism,” judicial sources told AFP on Tuesday.

The wildly popular Youssef – whose weekly political satire programme Al-Bernameg (The Show) has spared few public figures of merciless critique – is currently on bail pending investigation into charges of insulting President Mohamed Morsi and Islam.

The new lawsuits accuse Youssef of “insulting the state of Pakistan and causing tensions in its relations with Egypt.”

He is also accused of insulting religion and “spreading atheism.”

In an episode after Morsi visited Pakistan in March, Youssef made fun of a hat worn by the president when he received an honorary doctorate from a university in Islamabad.

One lawsuit claimed that Youssef was attempting to “spread atheism” after he allegedly made fun of the prayer ritual which constitutes “questioning one of the five pillars of Islam.”

Youssef confirmed he was being investigated again on his Twitter account.
“A new investigation started against me accusing me of: insulting Islam (again), spreading atheism & insulting Pakistan #LOL.”

Under Egypt’s legal system, complaints are filed to the public prosecutor who decides whether there is enough evidence to refer the case to trial.

Suspects can be detained during this stage of investigation.

We are a Nation crazy about SITCOMS and COMEDIES.

Please feel free to make fun of Pakistan. Nobody makes more fun of Pakistan than Pakistanis themselves.

Does anyone have a video they can post of this show ?

I would love to watch that , especially if it is about our Politicians with FAKE DEGREES.

That would be so FUNNYYYYYYYYYY..........:D

Well atleast that hat is bigger than the brain of TV show host

I have noticed Egyptians throwing potshots at Pakistan.

Egyptians usually hate pakistanis

wasn't my observation during my 2 brief visits there.....I found them to be pretty similar to Pakistanis in some ways; their aam-aadmi is like ours and their elitists are snobs similar like ours.

when they were under the dark cloud of socialism in the 1950s, on a government level the 2 countries weren't friendly

did pakistan stepped into an egyptian's tail that they are insulting pakistan nowadays?

this comedian guy is basically the equivalent of America's Jon Steward; he's a satirist - his job is to make fun of people

if i were you guys - i wouldnt waste time on this, it aint such a big deal.

I have noticed Egyptians throwing potshots at Pakistan.

when/where?

there was that crazy Coptic guy who berated Islam and he mentioned Pakistan at some point......a guy in self imposed exile who hasnt even been to his native country in ages and who doesnt even speak his native tongue cant exactly be seen as "representing Egypt"

are there any other things Egyptians said about Pakistan? if so share, then i'll comment

Apparently honorary doctorates are the way to go.

Why did I waste those precious years in college when I could have gotten a PhD with almost no effort :P

i never saw the thread, so i wouldnt really know

Pakistan figures very little in Egyptian affairs nowdays; they are so divided now just over where to take their country Post-Mubarak, and intolerance and breaking down of law & order are- regrettably - taking place there.

by the way - alot of posters here berate or make childish fun of Arabs in general; we have satire shows like Hum Sab Umid Sai Hai which make fun of our politicians as well as a few episodes i saw which made fun of Gulf Arabs.

it's satire. . .

if it was a govt. official berating Pakistan somehow then yeah, there'd be reason to be upset. No need to declare fatwas on someone whose job is just to make people laugh a little bit, regardless of their popularity or lack thereof
