Egyptian army forces have destroyed 12 cross-border tunnels linking Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula with the blockaded Gaza Strip, a military spokesman said Monday.

In a statement, Army Colonel Tamer al-Rifai said the mouths of the 12 tunnels -- all of them located in northern Sinai -- had been destroyed.

He did not say, however, when exactly the demolition operations were carried out.

Blockaded by both Israel and Egypt since 2007, the Palestinian Gaza Strip has relied on the network of cross-border tunnels for years to import badly-needed supplies, including food, fuel and medicine.

Since the 2013 ouster of elected President Mohamed Morsi by the military, however, the Egyptian army has destroyed many of the tunnels, which it says are used to support militant activity in Sinai.

In recent months, the Egyptian army has been methodically flooding the cross-border tunnel network with seawater from the Mediterranean.

In 2014, the Egyptian authorities began setting up a "buffer zone" along the border with Gaza following a spate of militant attacks on Egyptian security personnel deployed in the volatile peninsula.

Egypt and GCC are already an alliance . Lebanese security forces and Hezbullah are aware that Sheeba farms are under occupation too. Lebanese President Saad Hariri and Lebanese are aware who are behind the assasination of Rafik Hariri.

Cairo: At least nine terrorists were killed and 16 others injured as Egypt's army foiled an attack on a number of security checkpoints in North Sinai, military officials said.

The attack, which took place yesterday, targeted different army checkpoints at the same time. The attackers used cars carrying explosives, motorcycles and electronic weapons, military spokesperson colonel Tamer el-Refa'e said in a statement.

The armed forces exchanged fire with the attackers killing nine and injuring 16 others. They also destroyed six of their vehicles, he added.

North Sinai has been the stage for many terrorists attacks since the January 2011 revolution that toppled the ex-president Hosni Mubarak.

The attacks mainly targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by military following massive protests against his rule.

Over 700 security personnel have been reported killed since then.

The military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses that belong to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.

Cairo: At least nine policemen were killed and 14 others injured today when ISIS-linked suicide bombers rammed a garbage truck packed with explosives into an Egyptian security checkpoint, the latest attack in the restive North Sinai governorate.

The attack in el-Masaeed district of Al-Arish city was carried out by members of Ansar Beit el-Maqdes, a Sinai-based militant group which pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2014.

The attackers also opened fire on the security post after ramming the truck packed with explosives into the checkpoint.

However, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The terrorists used a garbage truck, which was stolen earlier from the municipality of el-Arish.

The 14 persons injured include four civilians, police said.

Reports said other civilians who live near the explosion site may have been killed, but there was no confirmed numbers.

CAIRO: The Egyptian army said Monday that assailants killed five soldiers in the Sinai Peninsula, where security forces have been targeted in a spate of jihadist attacks.

“The armed forces mourn with great sadness and sorrow the five martyrs who were martyred in Sinai at the hands of disloyal fundamentalist elements, enemies of the nation and religion,” the military said.

The statement did not elaborate on the cause of their deaths.

Jihadists have killed hundreds of soldiers and policemen since the military overthrow of Islamist president Muhammad Mursi in 2013 unleashed a bloody crackdown on his supporters.

The crackdown decimated the Islamist movement and killed hundreds of his followers, and set off a jihadist insurgency that has killed hundreds of security personnel.

Most of the attacks have taken place in the Sinai Peninsula, which borders Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip, but attacks have also been carried out in other areas including Cairo.

And the majority of these attacks have been carried out by the jihadist Daesh group, which views Mursi’s Muslim Brotherhood group as heretics.

At least four troops and two dozens militants were killed Saturday in a fresh bout of violence in Egypt’s restive Sinai Peninsula.

Army forces killed 20 militants during a raid in northern and central Sinai, military spokesman, Col. Tamer al-Rifai, said in a statement.

He said seven militants were injured and 36 others detained during the swoop.

“Four army personnel, including two officers, were killed in a bomb blast during the raid,” al-Rifai said.

According to the spokesman, a number of houses and vehicles belonging to the militants were destroyed during the raid.

Army forces destroyed two underground tunnels and the entrances of five other tunnels along border between the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip during the swoop, he said.

Since mid-2013, when Mohamed Morsi -- Egypt’s first freely-elected president -- was ousted in a military coup, hundreds of Egyptian security personnel deployed in Sinai have been killed amid an ongoing militant insurgency.

The Egyptian security forces, meanwhile, continue to wage a fierce campaign against what they describe as Sinai-based "terrorist groups".

Egypt’s army-backed authorities say they are battling the Welayat Sinai (Province of Sinai) group, which is said to have links to the Daesh terrorist organization.

Militants on Friday blew up a school in the city of Rafah in Egypt’s northern Sinai Peninsula, according to a local security source.

"Terrorists remotely detonated a bomb planted in a school in Rafah’s Al-Rasm neighborhood," the source told Anadolu Agency, speaking anonymously due to restrictions on talking to media.

The bomb, he said, had not resulted in any casualties.

According to the same source, "terrorists" blew up the school to prevent security forces from using its roof to monitor their movements.

Last November, hundreds of families returned to Rafah after leaving more than two years ago amid intensive military operations against Sinai-based militant groups.

In a related development, security forces killed three militants near the city of Al-Arish (located roughly 47 kilometers southwest of Rafah), according to another local security source.

The source said the militants had attempted to flee the area on a motorbike before they were neutralized by security forces.

The northern Sinai Peninsula has remained the epicenter of a deadly insurgency since Mohamed Morsi -- Egypt’s first freely elected president -- was ousted in a 2013 military coup.

Since then, the "Welayet Sinai" ("Province of Sinai") group -- said to have links to the Daesh terrorist organization -- has claimed responsibility for a spate of attacks on Egyptian security forces deployed in the region.

CAIRO: Egyptian soldiers killed 14 militants and arrested ten others in a raid in central Sinai, the military said on Monday.

The operation over the past five days destroyed three car bombs and 10 other explosive devices and seized weapons, communication devices and military clothing, the army spokesman added.

An Islamist insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula has gained pace since the military toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s oldest Islamist movement, in 2013 following mass protests against him.
Sinai Province, the militant group behind the insurgency, pledged allegiance to Daesh in 2014 and has been accused of killing hundreds of soldiers and police since then.

Militant activity in central Sinai is less frequent than in its more restive north, where Islamic State attacks on military and police checkpoints are common. (Reporting by Ahmed Tolba)

CAIRO

At least three Egyptian soldiers were killed and another four injured Friday when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, a security source said.

The source, who spoke to Anadolu Agency anonymously due to restrictions on speaking to media, said the blast had left three soldiers dead and another four seriously injured.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident, while the Egyptian government has yet to officially comment.

Two police officers were killed and another four injured late Thursday by a roadside bomb in Egypt’s volatile Sinai Peninsula, according to a statement released by the Interior Ministry.

“While police were on patrol in the city of Al-Arish [in northeastern Sinai], they discovered terrorists planting an improvised explosive device,” the statement read.

While one of the militants was killed in an ensuing exchange of fire, a second roadside bomb went off, killing two of the police officers at the scene, the statement added.

Al-Arish has recently witnessed a fresh spate of militant activity.

On Wednesday, the Interior Ministry said a senior police officer had been killed -- also by a roadside bomb -- in the city.

Sinai has remained the epicenter of a deadly militant insurgency since mid-2013, when Mohamed Morsi -- Egypt’s first freely elected president -- was ousted in a military coup.

Since then, hundreds of Egyptian security personnel have been killed in militant attacks across the restive peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

Egyptian security forces, meanwhile, continue to wage a fierce campaign -- involving elements of both the police and army -- against what they describe as Sinai-based "terrorist groups".

Cairo: Ten members of Egypt`s security forces were killed when their vehicles were hit by two improvised bombs during a military operation against suspected militants in the Sinai peninsula, the army said on Thursday.

It said the security forces also killed 15 people and arrested seven others during the raid which it said targeted "highly dangerous terrorists" in the central Sinai area.

Egypt is battling an Islamist insurgency in the rugged and thinly populated Northern Sinai, which gained pace after the military overthrew President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013 following mass protests against his rule.

The militant group staging the insurgency pledged allegiance to Islamic State in 2014 and adopted the name Sinai Province. It is blamed for the killing of hundreds of soldiers and policemen.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former military chief who led the overthrow of Mursi, describes Islamist militancy as an existential threat to Egypt, an ally of the United States. Islamic State controls large parts of Iraq and Syria and has a strong presence in Libya, which borders Egypt.

A military spokesman said the security forces also found and destroyed half a tonne of TNT explosive, and seized two four-wheel drive cars containing hand grenades and hundreds of mobile phones.

CAIRO: Four Egyptian soldiers were killed in an explosion that hit their armored vehicle on Saturday in the northern Sinai peninsula, where the government is battling a Daesh-led insurgency, security sources said.

The incident occurred about 20 km south of the Mediterranean town of Al-Arish.

On Thursday, 10 soldiers were killed in the Sinai peninsula when their vehicles were hit by two improvised bombs during an operation in which 15 suspected militants were also killed, the army said. Two policemen were killed near Al-Arish in a separate incident, the Interior Ministry said.

Separately, police used tear gas to disperse an angry mob of Muslims approaching Christian homes in southern Egypt.

Three children were killed by an explosive device that went off in the city of Al-Arish in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula, according to a local security source.

A group of children in Al-Arish’s village of Al-Sabeel discovered the device late Tuesday, which exploded when they touched it, the source said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to media.

No group has claimed responsibility for planting the device.

Sinai has remained at the epicenter of a deadly militant insurgency since mid-2013, when Mohamed Morsi -- Egypt’s first freely-elected president -- was ousted and imprisoned in a military coup.

Since then, hundreds of Egyptian security personnel have been killed across the peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Egyptian security forces, meanwhile, continue to wage a fierce campaign -- involving elements of both the police and army -- against what they describe as Sinai-based "terrorist groups".
