Desperate times make for strange bed fellows -- the fragmentation of power is starting as bitter rivals Atta Mohammad Noor and Dostum are all smiles and declare an alliance:

Article here, excerpts below:

A deteriorating security situation in the northern parts of Afghanistan has resulted in two former rivals Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum and Atta Mohammad Noor setting aside their differences and forging a new coalition aimed at fighting insurgents.

Noor, from Jamiat-e-Islami Party of Afghanistan, and Dostum, from Junbish-i-Milli Islami Afghanistan, reportedly held several meetings over the past week in which both sides pledged to put their differences aside and work together to tackle common issues, said Zabi Fitrat, deputy spokesman to Jamiat-e-Islami on Monday.

"One of the key reasons for the union is the deteriorating security situation in the northern regions. Security threats are on the rise in the northern parts of the country, an issue which persuaded the two influential political forces to make an alliance and jointly fight the threats," Fitrat said.

So what about Ghani?I guess he is of no importance since Kabul never controlled the areas

The developments in Kabul are very dangerous -- Ghani seems isolated of late and palace intrigues are in full swing. Even Afghan elites known for their outwardly decorum are shedding polite pretenses.

You can see a raw edge in talk about Pakistan and how Ghani is not a *strong* Afghan leader. Surprisingly the person who I thought would be leading the charge, Aqa Abdullah Abdullah seems to be mission in action -- perhaps he is enjoying his Loui Vuitton slippers and sipping his fine French wine (playing his fiddle too?).

yup things look explosive right now -- the life blood is the economic viability of the state -- when the pie is growing everybody plays nice -- when the pie shrinks, well ...
