Dostum Accuses Ghani Of Monopolizing Power

First Vice President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum on Thursday night criticized President Ashraf Ghani for what he said was centralizing power within the presidential palace.

Dostum said he will get his rights within the national unity government (NUG), otherwise he will take action in consultation with the people. He said the appointment of personnel in government departments is not being done fairly and that he can no longer stand by quietly.

Dostum said: "I will get my rights. Taking a new decision is better than having no authority."

He said that he has no authority in the NUG and insists that he will move according to the outcome of consultations with the people.

Dostum said: "If you (people) want me to stay in the NUG, I will stay; if you say leave NUG, I will leave. If I cannot do anything, but I do know how to launch civic activities."

The vice president's comments join a slew of others who have in recent weeks spoken out about Ghani's centralization of power.

"These moves and tensions will help our enemy. In fact they are doing what the enemy wants," said Assadullah Walwnji, a political analyst.

"Considering the challenges that our country is facing right now, the president needs to involve all the figures from both election teams and other political parties in government affairs so as to solve the current problems," Farooq Majroj, an MP said.

The spokesperson for the president's office did not want to comment on Dostum's speech.

It is said that one of the reasons of behind the rift between Ghani and his CEO Abdullah Abdullah was the monopolization of power by the president.

Sadly things are definitely getting more interesting -- but Ghani and the NUG have a monumental task on their hands -- perhaps the best even a competent government can hope for is a survivable crash landing.

Dostum is quite good at reading the tea leaves.
He was part of Najibullah's gov when it suited him and immediately switched sides when it became clear that Najib's days were numbered.
I am wondering are we seeing history repeat itself here?
