LUCKNOW: Eid means mega opening for Hindi films featuring the super stars, but this year a cleric in Meerut has appealed Muslims not to name their children after actors Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan.
In his address after the Eid ul Fitr namaaz, Qari Shafiq-ur-Rehman said there was no point naming one's children after Salman or Shahrukh Khan as they were no ideals or role models. He stated that the actors release their films on Eid to earn money during the festive season but never contribute anything to the better of the community.
The cleric's appeal coincided with the release of a film starring Shahrukh Khan on Friday. For the past several years, films of Salman Khan such as Wanted, Dabangg and Bodyguard have been released on Eid and flushed the box office with cash. Shah Rukh Khan's Veer Zaara was the Eid release in 2004. Explaining the logic of his words to TOI on phone, the cleric said, "The name of a person makes an impact on his personality and thinking. Therefore, I advise parents to choose their child's name for its meaning." He added that film celebrities were no role model. "They thrive on the feelings and emotions of the people," he said.
Sunni cleric Maulana Khalid Rasheed of Darul-ifta Farangi Mahal in Lucknow, however, said the statement cannot be generalised. "It is true that name make an impact on a person but it cannot be a thumb rule. If someone called Ram commits a crime, it doesn't mean the importance of Ram would decrease for his followers," he said. Shia Cleric Maulana Yasoob Abbas too said it was not wise to generalise a choice of name.
