DoD Reprograms $8B, Pakistan Closure Costs $2.1B

Read more, Son. Start with America's GDP and defense budget.

A yesterdays super power that is borrowing to pay its every day bills because it continue to spend as yester years gets cut in its credit rating yeah it says a lot about their GDP and Defense Budget.

.
No big deal.

The DoD is asking for permission to shift $1.7 billion within its own accounts, as it has traditionally done end of each June.

You know, the kind of stuff that needs to happen when a military is actually held accountable for the money given to it, but that might be a strangely unfathomable concept to many here.

Next question?

Americans continue to borrow Money to feed their ever growing Military and its adventure is called Military held Responsible.

The Army’s $1.7 billion in additional funding requests

Last i checked (additional) means they want more then they were given not transfer.

ahunh... so maybe thats why Panetta is requesting more money from the congress because they have nothing extra left in their defence budget..?

Money is approved in defense budgets for specific things. it is not just 1 big pool of money that can be spent for whatever. if more money is needed it can be transferred from another area or a supplemental budget requested. but both require approval from the relevant authority. This is unlike other countries where there is not as much accountability in budgets and the military run roughshod over the civilian Government.

Personaly I think the U.S. should simply stop trying to reopen the pakistan supply route and ship the equipment back. Then close down most U.S. interests and step up the drone strikes in the tribal areas.

Very dumb idea i must say, already anti American sentiments are all time high in Pakistan.

IMO US sould accept the terms set by Pakistan's parliament for reopening of supply routes, it's not a big deal to apologise for a mistake that US has committed & nor it is a big deal to pay $5-6k per truck(already this cost is currently at $20-22k via NDN). Also you have to look in the past that despite all hurdles, Pakistan remain stood by America since 1947, whereas whenever Pakistan faced troubles US never help it, is this the way to treat your true friends & allies? or this attitude is only against Pakistan? Why aid, why not trade & why not pay for service?

Hope to see good relations in near future between Pak-US.:pakistan::usflag:

Pentagon needs more funds as Nato routes cut-off costs billions

WASHINGTON: The Pentagon has asked Congress to shift billions of dollars in the defense budget to pay for added fuel costs to ferry supplies to Afghanistan after Pakistan closed its border to NATO convoys, US officials said Monday.

In a letter to congressional defense committees, the Pentagon requested "reprogramming" $8.2 billion in funds previously approved to finance more urgent priorities, officials said.

There were "some unanticipated costs that we just didn't foresee," spokesman Captain John Kirby told reporters.

It remained unclear what programs in the defense budget would receive less funding as a result.

A large portion of the request was due to the costs "associated with the extended closure of the ground lines of communication" in Pakistan, Kirby said.

In November, Pakistan shut its border to NATO supply convoys bound for Afghanistan after a US air strike accidentally killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

The Pentagon reportedly estimates an alternative network of northern supply routes through Central Asia has generated $2.1 billion in additional fuel costs compared to the shorter Pakistani route.

The request to shift funds was also needed to cover the cost of deploying an additional aircraft carrier to the Gulf region.

"Earlier this year, we did increase the carrier presence there," said Kirby, with the US Navy moving from one to two aircraft carriers present in the area at all times.

The expanded naval deployment came amid rising tensions with Iran, which in December and January threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz in response to increased international pressure over its nuclear program.

The US Air Force also had to pay for more "flying hours" partly related to the closure of the Pakistan routes, as the military has had to rely more on cargo aircraft to ferry in supplies to the US-led force in Afghanistan, officials said. (AFP)

Zakii, I think the figure is WAY bigger than what they are disclosing!

U.S is quite literally paying a very high price for it's arrogance

.
Is U.S serious in taking the Balochistan on its own and utilizing the Gawadr Port for its self in future. I have heard that from some people that Southern Sindh is going to become a new province very soon.

.
This is only the direct monetary expenditure by using the other routes the other important factors are time taken to provide the same logistics by using other routes.

.
that is why they are coming here constantly for opening of lines..
