WASHINGTON: US secretary of sateJohn Kerry called on national security adviserShivshankar Menon and voiced regret about the case of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragadebeing strip-searched after her arrest last week on charges of visa fraud, the US state department said on Wednesday.

"As a father of two daughters about the same age as Devyani Khobragade, the secretary empathizes with the sensitivities we are hearing from India about the events that unfolded after Khobragade's arrest," state department spokeswoman Marie Harf said in a written statement, referring to the Indian diplomat.

"In his conversation with national security adviser (Shivshankar) Menon, he expressed his regret, as well as his concern that we not allow this unfortunate public issue to hurt our close and vital relationship with India," Harf added.

Reading the feedback in the foreign news outlets, there is a two pronged attack on Indians based on this.

Justification because the lady is part of the elite in India and hey, she mistreats the downtrodden. The second is she mistreated the maid, so the treatment meted out is justified because she is just a consular official.

I see a pattern in India related stories in the west. A lot of posters seem to express concern for the poor or the lower castes or the Women, but what simmers beneath is contempt. Whta is deplorable is they use legitimate concerns to mask their views.

As far the "Legal Aspects" are concerned; the issue of the Ship detained in Tuticorin is distinctly different. That is a case under International Law of a Shp that could be considered to be a "Pirate Rover". Inasmuch as the law is concerned, India has very strong grounds to prosecute that case further and it should; absolutely unequivocally.

While in this case, so far its the "Human Dignity" aspect that is of concern. Which BTW; also happens to be enshrined in Art.40-42 of the Vienna Convention since this Human happens to be a Diplomat besides. This is different from any issue of "Diplomatic Immunity".

No connections can be made between the two issues, UNLESS; its the Dept. of State GOTUS that is insidiously doing so.
While I am inclined to believe that its not so, I will add a "caveat": the American Official Estt. has a past History of being Devious and Duplicitous. That may be still continuing.
