Diplomat Madhuri Gupta chargsheeted for passing secret info to ISI
Jul 20, 2010
NEW DELHI: Delhi Police today chargesheeted disgraced diplomat Madhuri Gupta accusing her of passing secret information to Pakistan's ISI during her posting in Islamabad.

Gupta, who was arrested in April, has been accused of being in touch with two ISI officials, Mubshar Raza Rana and Jamshed.

The over 700-page chargesheet and annexures filed before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja sought the prosecution of the IFS Group B officer under various provisions of the Official Secrets Act and the Indian Penal Code.

Police has cited 30 witnesses to buttress the charges against Gupta.

The judge said the chargesheet will be taken for consideration tomorrow.

Gupta who was brought in the court, denied all the charges against her.

Earlier, when Gupta was arrested, police had alleged that she was given Rs one lakh for allegedly passing secret information to ISI agents.

Gupta, 53, posted as second secretary, Press and Information at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, was arrested on April 22 by the Delhi police's Special Cell under the Official Secrets Act on charges of revealing classified information to Pakistani officials.

She had allegedly passed on the information to the Pakistani agents by using email through her phone. Police recovered from her SIM cards she had obtained in Pakistan.

The investigators had seized five computers from her office and residence in Islamabad.

India is seriously attacking our ISI as it has concluded that if ISI is weakened, we will make Pakistan do what we want to. But guess what.. Nation Stands with its security services. Period. If India is pointing finger at our security forces, you are pointing finger at the Whole Nation which we wouldn't tolerate. You just saw results of blaming our security services in recent Pakistan/India dialog.

DAWN.COM | World | Indian diplomat Madhuri Gupta charged with spying

NEW DELHI: A junior Indian diplomat arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan was charged Tuesday under the official secrets act, police said.
Madhuri Gupta, who had been working in the Indian embassy in Islamabad prior to her arrest, was booked under three sections of the act, Deputy Police Commissioner Shibesh Singh told AFP.

Gupta, 53, worked in the embassy's information service. She was called back to New Delhi in April on the pretext of consultations before police swooped on her at home.

Her lawyer, Joginder Dasiya, confirmed that charges had been filed in court.

“When I get the copy tomorrow morning (of the police charges) I will be able to comment. At the moment I have no details,” Dasiya said.

Depending on the precise nature of the charges, Gupta could face a prison sentence of anywhere between three and 14 years if convicted.

According to Indian police, Gupta had been under surveillance for six months before she was taken into custody.
She had worked in the Indian mission for nearly three years and news reports said she was alleged to have passed on information from the Islamabad head of India's external intelligence service.

Former diplomats said Gupta would in theory have had limited access in her role in the information wing.
As a second secretary, she ranked low in the diplomatic hierarchy, senior only to the entry-level third secretary.

Pakistan had played down the scandal, which broke just days before the prime ministers of India and Pakistan met for talks at a South Asian leadership summit in Bhutan.

Soon after the arrest, Gupta’s lawyer had insisted that her client was being framed and said police had failed to provide any evidence against her.

A Delhi court had refused Dahiya’s arguments for bail, saying the alleged crimes were “too grave” in nature.
