Hi,
I was trolling the YouTube and ended up listing to an Indian analyst abhijit Iyer Mitra with an interesting opinion on the pl-15

he feels that meteor missiles is better than the Pl15 because

1) meteor is air breathing and pl-15 is not hence would have to mange the extra weight to maneuver in the kill phase.

2) meteor is more maneuverable even though it is a long range bvr missile

I am confused as pl-15 has dual rocket motors one for launch and the second For the kill phase it would make it about as much maneuverable. These missiles don’t attempt to hit their targets but rather use proximity fuses.

if the above assumption is correct the s-400 missiles 40N6E would face the same issues

can someone please help me with these details

The PL-15 has multi-pulse motor if I'm not mistaken ... I have heard a Chinese ramjet is in the works. Would be interesting to see if future PL-15s incorporate it.

Well yea, so the 40N6E isn't really designed to be able to hit maneuvering targets. Its more for supporting assets, i.e awacs, tanker, etc. If someone is trying to hit an F-16 with the 40N6E id question their training.

In terms of meteor and PL-15, i don't really get what you mean by 'extra weight'. I don't understand where the 'extra weight' is coming from (perhaps someone could explain?) but to my understanding, both missiles use some form of fuel, the only difference is, the PL-15 uses two sources of fuel kinda, separated by a barrier which is burnt on combustion (refer to diagram). Also yea, in the kill phase, you just need to be able to get close enough to the target to get a kill, i think the source is misinformed. Also, i don't see how he has claims for maneuverability.

Sidenote, the meteor is believed to be vastly overhyped by many industry experts, some even claiming the AIM-120D to be superior.

meteror is less maneuveralbe because it use ramjet engine, which can not absorb enough air in high G mobility. The is why US, Russian and China only use ramjet engine in missiles for low mobility targets such as bomber

Meteor has also drag issues because of intake and most AAMs/SAMs has a proximity fuse with few exception hit to kill warhead i think uses only on ABM systems like PAC-3/THAAD

Yes you should agree to him , because you comparing two different missiles from two different system , ONE IS SAM SYSTEM MISSILE AND ONE BVR , WRONG COMPARASION

I wanted to take a dual motor missile vs an air breathing missile. My concept was that if the pl-15 is no good than the Russian s-400 missiles, r-57, r-77, aim-120d etc. are equally as bad.

So wanted to call out some of frenimies across the border for their hypocrisy

Dude the S-400 is a Surface to Air Missile (SAM) system while the PL-15 is an Air to Air missile. Do you not know what the difference is? You are basically comparing a wheel of a car to the brakes of a car here.

I do unfortunately, once the missile is airborne and the booster is gone it turns into an a2a system. The point I wanted to make was the hypocrisy of the Indians. Somehow air breathing is better in meteor than the dual motor rockets in aim-120d or pl-15

Trejectories of both missiles are different as well as purpose and what is r-57 there is no russian air to air missile called r-57

Ramjet missiles ( air to air ) difinately has an advantage because of sustain thrust as compare to rocket powered aams
