Dhaka urges US to legalise undocumented Bangladeshis

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen had a meeting with US Congresswoman Grace Meng on Wednesday (US time) to discuss the ways and means of further improving political and economic ties with Bangladesh, a spokesperson of the foreign ministry said on Thursday.

US Congresswoman Grace Meng represents a large number of Bangladeshi Diaspora voters in New York, and always has been an active member of Bangladesh caucus in US Congress.

Appreciating Biden Administration's liberal approach to immigration, Dr Momen called upon Congresswoman Meng to make efforts to legalise undocumented Bangladeshi Diaspora in the US through taking up the matter with the new US government.

The Bangladesh Foreign Minister, referring to the celebration of birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of the independence of Bangladesh, invited Congresswoman Meng to visit the country with a group of US lawmakers to see the remarkable socio-economic progress achieved under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and also the situation of the displaced Rohingyas.

Dr Momen briefed the US lawmaker on Bangladesh's success in overcoming the Covid-19 challenges as well as on the existing conducive environment for foreign investment in the country, said the spokesperson.

The Foreign Minister is currently visiting Washington DC on an official trip to reach out the new Administration to further enhance the bilateral relations and to convey Bangladesh's willingness to work closely with the new US Administration.

Why would a foreign minister ask a congresswomen to lobby for illegal immigrants? Can't he directly raise this issue with his counterpart?

one thing ive noted over the years is that the bangla gov't seems to be "exporting" its citizens to different lands at whole sale level . And the more surreal thing is that in most cases they even deny about their existence let alone taking em back

This is a direct admission of bangladeshi illegal immigants in USA ,

Deportation should be the next step.

Bangladesh should be tracked/sanctioned by UN for official human trafficking.

Stop living in your own lala land. Every country in the world has illegal immigrants in USA which numbers over 11 million and India has a big share of it.

Around 100k illegal Bangladeshi is in USA where most entered USA legally, later lost status.

As present administration in USA declared they are going to legalize illegal immigrants whats wrong to lobby for the Bangladeshis to put them on the priory list?

Isn’t India doing the same? Specially for the IT coolies who are in H1B visa for extension and turning them to green card along with not to hamper future H1B applications?

The guy has no understanding of how the US works. He thinks he is dealing with Modi.

As a legal immigrant -- someone who followed the rules, crossed the t's, and dotted the i's -- I wholeheartedly oppose any amnesty give to illegal immigrants regardless of who they are and where they are from.

That a foreign minister of a country would even request such a thing is unbecoming. This will only encourage more illegal immigration.

Giving amnesty to illegal immigrants is a hot-button issue in the US. The Democrats don't have the political muscle to pass such legislation as their leads in both the House and Senate are razor-thin.
