Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar train service likely to boost tourism

Unveiling a fresh route with the potential of attracting both foreign and domestic tourists, the government is set to launch a Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar train service at the end of next year.

The fresh initiative is expected to further boost tourism to the coastal beach town famous for its long, unbroken stretch of natural sandy sea beach, at the southern tip of Bangladesh.

The installation of rail tracks for the route will be concluded by December 2022, Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan told UNB.

“Visitors will be able to travel on train direct from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar next year. Although the project term was fixed until June 2022, I’m keeping six months in hand,” Sujan said.

Two Bangladesh Railway projects are among the ten megaprojects sketched by the government, the minister informed, adding: “One is to install rail tracks from Dohazari to Cox’s Bazar.”

Once it opens, the railway’s expansion in the tourism hotspot of the region will be expanded significantly and at the same time it will contribute for the advancement of the country.

To attract the tourists railway stations will be decorated lucratively and safety of the commuters will be ensured, Nurul Islam said.

An iconic railway station will be built spending Tk 2.15 billion in the shape of an oyster where all international standard facilities will be available, he said.

The railway track will stretch to Ghumdum near Myanmar via Ramu, which will later be extended until China, the minister stated.

Project Director (PD) Md Mofijur Rahman said Dohazari-Cox’s Bazar-Ghumdum Railway is a mega project of the government which has been categorized among the fast track projects prioritized by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“We are working on to launch the rail track by 2022 and around 49 percent work of the project has been completed until January 31 this year,” the project director said.

“Currently cutting of soil, constructing bridge, station, culvert, level crossing and an iconic building in Cox’s Bazar are all underway,” he added.

The project will ease tourism to Cox’s Bazar, triggering a boost in the socioeconomic condition of the region, he insisted.

BR will provide secure, comfortable and cheap transportation for the commuters. Besides, it will facilitate cheap and easy transportation of fish, raw materials of paper, forest and agricultural products.

The 128-kilometer railway route will have nine railway stations dotting the way, at Satkania, Lohagora, Chakaria, Dulahazra, Eidgao, Ramu, Cox’s Bazar Sadar, Ukhiya, and Ghumdum.

All the railway stations will have computer-based interlock signal system and digital telecommunication system.

Moreover, three large bridges will be built over the Sangu, Matamuhuri and Bankhali Rivers, along with 43 small bridges, 201 culverts and 144 level crossings.

Two highway crossings will be constructed in Ramu and Cox’s Bazar and a flyover at Kewchiya area of Satkania.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid thefoundation of the railway project in April 2011, and the budget for the railway project was fixed at Tk 183.5 million

A total of 88 kilometres of rail track will be installed from Dohazari to Ramu, 12 kilometre from Ramu to Cox’s Bazar and 28 kilometres from Ramu to Ghumdum.

Please watch the photograph to see that the station platform still remains so lower than the Floor Level of the copaches. When the British introduced railway some few hundred years ago, it was like this. The Britishers have revised the height in their own country, and Bangladesh has not.

So, this is quite an example of underdevelopment. Another is the coaches are all very small compartmentalized. These should be one coach one compartment.

We remain underdeveloped in everything in railway, but our idiots want BD to loan and spend $16 billion to make Bullet Train lines. It is a horrible country with people of backward mindset.

Good.

More domestic tourism should be encouraged and facilities need to be provided. It will create more local jobs and will also help reducing money getting out of country in form of foreign tourism.

Plus, with increase in domestic tourism, expect some/more foreign tourists too, which will bring more money to locals/country.

Japanese passenger trains are a different philosophy from our British Railway Legacy, mostly DMU (Diesel) and EMU (Electric) and run on many, many different lines. All standardized designs that sort of look like subway cars. Not known for great looks but highly reliable, functional, practical and robust.

This is different from bullet trains (Shinkansen). Bullet trains run on their own dedicated lines and are known for their sleek aircraft like appearance, luxury services, quietness and discreet operation. There were eight or nine different generations of bullet trains depending on 1960's to today, and there are specialized ones (double deckers) too.

Most Japanese regular speed multiple unit passenger trains do not have separate engines like we use in Bangladesh (very rarely they run special trains with separate engines). The electric motors are hung below the floor, or for diesels - in a separate isolated compartment in one of the cars of a pair.

Japanese Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) mostly look like this.

Electric Multiple Units (EMU's) look like this (notice catenary power pickup on top),

Their cargo train locomotives are also mostly electric, but some are diesel too. These belong to a division called JR Freight. Some are center cab switchers and some recent ones have cabs on both ends. This is DF200 with BO-BO-BO wheel arrangement.

This is changing now. I have posted a video on Chattogram station which showed the platform is raised in renovation to make it more at level with the train floor. It will be done step by step with all other stations.

Not only that, the major rail stations in Bangladesh such as Kamalapur, Airport station, Chattogram, now, roof riding is strictly prohibited, beggars and vagabonds are banned, stations perimeter is enclosed by fence restricting unwanted entry, platform and the rail tracks spot clean. You would not be even able to enter the platform now without ticket. This happened within the last year. Look at this video of Chattogram station.

Our railway's coaches are good enough for a developing country like Bangladesh. If we can reach the development stage of China or Japan, then our coaches will improve accordingly. Most of the intercity train now run with new coaches brought from Indonesia, India, Iran and they are in decent quality, appropriate for a middle income country.

I think, you need more frequent update about the development happening in Bangladesh. Things you are saying was appropriate 5-10 years ago. Bangladesh is changing fast.

Most of the intercity train now run with new coaches brought from Indonesia, India, Iran and they are in decent quality, appropriate for a middle income country.

I think, you need more frequent update about the development happening in Bangladesh. Things you are saying was appropriate 5-10 years ago. Bangladesh is changing fast.

The one to Kyiv I hear is good but others that connect different cities have seats that are falling apart, smells like asphalt and travels extremely slow, Bangladesh’s train comparatively are faster and has arguably better interior even for the lowest class

Didn't Ukraine import coaches and locomotives from South Korea? There was a huge controversy apparently - the public did not like the fact that they'd be riding in Korean trains (ROTEM) because they had initial quality issues.

The upcoming 40 engine from US will run at 150km/h speed. Many of our current engine can run at 130km/h but not done yet as a small portion of Dhaka-Chattogram line is still yet to be converted into dual gauze double line whose works is still going on. Once the entire Dhaka-Chattogram track converted into dual gauze double line, train will run at 140-150 km speed. Current average speed is 80km/h. By 2023, we can expect Dhaka-Cox's Bazar train journey at 150km/h. By then the entire length upto Cox's Bazar will be constructed into dual gauze double line.

Yep these go to Kiev only. Other intercity travels are done in old soviet electric trains

150km/h is enough for bd if we’re being honest. We need bulk transport not fast transport

I think you are a little wrong in your assumption by saying when we develop our compartments will develop. The reality is, improving the quality of anything including that of the passenger coaches is part of total national development.

One coach must have one compartment that can be freely accessed from one end to the other. But, BD coaches remain the same as I have seen in my childhood as a son of a railway servant. I have lived in many stations including Syedpur. I think I have good knowledge about the railway.

Thanks for uploading the Chittagong Station. It is now very good-looking comparing to what I saw before while I was in Chittagong. However, your video shows that the platform is still two or three steps lower than the compartment floors.

The level of the platform must be almost the same as the level of the train floor so that the passengers can directly step into the compartments.
