NEW DELHI: India's development is not a threat but an opportunity for China and the two sides should work together to further cement their strategic and cooperative partnership, a senior Chinese leader said on Monday.

"China's development is an opportunity rather than a threat to India. Likewise, India's development is not a threat but an opportunity for China," Chinese Communist Party Politburo member Zhou Yongkang said here.

He was addressing a seminar on Sino- India relations organised jointly by the Communist Party of China and the Congress.

Pointing out that the two countries were more interdependent on each other for global stability, Yangkong said, "In light of such a situation, it is all more necessary for China and India to handle our relationship from a strategic height and long-term perspective.

"At the new historical starting point, let us push for the further development of the strategic, cooperative partnership between us and jointly create a harmonious world of lasting peace and common prosperity," he said.

Observing that Chinese government policies advocated peaceful relations with India, Yongkang said the two countries should promote mutual political trust, economic and trade ties, expand friendly ties and strengthen international cooperation for further development of Sino-Indian relations.

Seeking strengthening of friendly consultations, he said, "For controversial issues and disagreements in exchanges, we should deal with them properly on the basis of mutual respect, consultation on an equal basis and the principle of mutual understanding and accommodation, so as not let improper handling of specific issues affect the overall relations."

Krishna hopes China removes barriers in IT, pharma

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna on Monday said he hoped China will provide a level playing field to India in pharmaceuticals and IT sector.

"There is a capacity for enormous growth... Hope China will provide India a level playing field in pharmaceuticals and IT sector where we face barriers," said Krishna.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of "China and India: 60 years and beyond" organised by the foreign affairs department of the Congress party.

Krishna said that the relationship between India and China is grossly under-realised and that both the countries face similar challenges, including globalisation, food and energy security, inclusive growth and skill development.

The two countries should examine if they were making best use of opportunities, he said.

"Are we making best of opportunities? Can we not be more sensitive to each other's concerns," Krishna asked.

He said the hotline between the two prime ministers will be operational soon.

Quoting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Krishna said the world is large enough to accommodate the aspirations of the two countries.

Calling for sustained engagement along with high degree of mutual sensitivity, the minister said: "The trade between the two countries will touch the target of $60 billion. The economic engagement needs to go beyond trade."

Bilateral trade volumes crossed $30.37 billion in the first half of the 2010-11 calendar year.

The conference was also addressed by Zhou Yu Kong, member of the standing committee of the politburo of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and Karan Singh, chairman of the foreign affairs department of the Congress.

Senior leaders from the Congress and the Communist party of China will also address the day-long seminar.

You know what, my uncle who travels to china for business purpose very often doesn't even know that China India have some issues.. Business is something which can improve relationship or even change enemies to take a neutral stance.. If our stupid media stop cribbing about small things it could be better for us...

China has no interest in India apart from business and India should keep the same thing in mind... Ya arunachal pradesh and all these issues will be there but there's no need to create big havoc about it.. It can be taken care off.. We have our govt there and for more than 4 decades it is our territory... Sometimes China must have provoked India but never created or took any strong action against it...

I think this stupid stigma of war between India and China is a wet dream, which both countries would never risk.. It took decades for both the countries to be at the level they are today... War will only send them to stone age... And China is mature nation who is a next super power, it will not act so immature to wage war and destroy this position...

God bless "MONEY"

Zhou holds talks with Congress, BJP, Left leaders

Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yong Kang met leaders of major political parties and hoped that such contacts would help improve ties between the two countries. After addressing a seminar on India-China relations, Mr. Zhou met leaders of the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Left parties.

Mr. Zhou met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and they exchanged views on fostering better party-to-party ties through frequent exchanges. Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari noted that the seminar held on Monday was in continuation of the process started last year to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The first seminar was held in Beijing and was attended among others by Law Minister Veerappa Moily.

The Chinese leader, a member of the Standing Committee of the Polit Buro of the Communist Party of China, met CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat, CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan, Forward Bloc general secretary G. Devarajan and Revolutionary Socialist Party general secretary Debabrata Biswas besides Hari Singh Kang (CPI-M) and D. Raja (CPI).

“We exchanged views on the relationship between the two countries and fraternal contacts,'' said Mr. Karat after the meeting. He hoped that ties would improve following the meeting between Prime Minster Manmohan Singh and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Hanoi last week on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations plus six meeting. The two leaders are slated to meet again here, probably before the end of the year

Mr. Zhou interacted with BJP leaders, including party president Nitin Gadkari, and invited a party delegation to visit China. The BJP president accepted the invitation and indicated that a team might visit China before the end of the year. Mr. Gadkari said his party was involved in running governments in nine States and the delegation would especially like to see the progress made by China in the fields of infrastructure and power.
