NEW DELHI: Denial of leave to Army personnel including officers and soldiers may tempt them to have extramarital affairs and in extreme cases they may also resort to misbehaviour and flirting, an Army study has said.

In its study 'roadmap to promote dignity of women and care for girl child in Army', the Jodhpur-based 12 'Konark' Corps has recommended that "grant of leave at regular intervals coupled with adequate training and self-discipline" can help in managing the "negative vibes" in them.

"Many peculiarities of military life is to remain separated from wife... Delays in going home or denial of leave may tempt a soldier to get into extramarital affair. An extreme case may also be flirting or misbehaving," the study said.

The study, which primarily focuses on empowerment of women and girl child, has recommended that "exemplary punishments" should be given to those who in any way are adversely affecting women related to the forces.

"The commanding officers of the units should ensure that any incident occurring and affecting women or girl child should be reported and action should be taken against offenders and no leniency should be shown towards such people," it said.

The 12 Corps headed by Lt Gen MMS Rai had commissioned the study in March this year under the Ahmedabad-based 11 Infantry Division and all the units of the formation have been asked to follow the recommendations.

The study identifies several types of violence that women may face at work place or at home including sexual violence, girl child labour and dowry-related violence.

Having extramarital affairs in the armed forces is considered a punishable offence. In the recent past, defence minister A K Antony had dismissed a Navy officer who allegedly had an affair with his fellow officer's wife.

If women need to seek protection from the army itself then God bless them.

I ve often heard that IA jawans dont get much leave.... needless to say this can result in psychological stress under harsh circumstances.

And relationships also tend to suffer, the longer the distance and the time between the partners.

From a purely psychological point of view the study is right on the mark. Intimacy is not just sex but having proxmy to another human promotes a sense of belongingness. Long disruptions in marriages can not only cause extra-marital affairs but also a degradation of the marriage and thus the family. It's great to see research being done on these things.

Leaving aside the affairs part- the issue here is the lack of leave IA solders get and that is absolutely correct. Compared to Western troops who fight in CI conflicts in, say, Afghanistan and Iraq with 3-4 weeks "in" 2-3 weeks "off" and repeat- the IA soldiers can be "in" for 6-8 months at a time.

This has got to take a toll on a person mentally if not physically also.

And then the Media asks why do so many soldiers commit suicide (even though the figures aren't particularity high by international standards).

For sure the IA needs to look at this in greater detail and take remedial action.

Based on experience, most of the Army wives/girlfriends are unfaithful.

They are entitled 2 months paid annual leave and 20 days ( or is it 30 ) days casual leave in a year.

No CO can deny leave neither does he. A fair % of soldiers are from rural backgrounds. they need to be home during harvesting / sowing times . Add to this is the fact Hindus have ' marriage seasons' wherein marriages are solemnized at specfic times of the year as dictated by Pundits. This leads to an influx of demands when most want to go either for their own marraiges or for their kin.

These are dynamic situations that requires real time handling.

Funny you put it like that. You just read the words 'affair' and 'Army' and came out with this wonderful post of yours. Its talking about the problems that women face at work and possible solutions which can help create a environment which is safe for women. Women have been subject to violence in may armies not just Indian.
