Demolition of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Residence at Dhanmondi 32

The house of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, located in Dhanmondi 32, is undergoing demolition amidst widespread protests. This action follows an online speech made by deposed premier Sheikh Hasina from exile in India, sparking a demolition campaign referred to as the "Bulldozer March".

Key Events:

Initial Demolition: The demolition began with vandalism at the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, with an excavator and crane being used to tear down the structure. Over half of the house has already been demolished.
Public Involvement: Many people, including students, have gathered at the site, chanting slogans and expressing their support for the demolition. Some individuals climbed onto the second and third stories of the building.
"Bulldozer March": The demolition campaign was initiated in response to a Facebook event called "Bulldozer March," which drew crowds to Dhanmondi 32. The building was also set ablaze .
Manual Demolition: After excavators left the scene, the demolition continued manually, with individuals tearing apart the remaining structure. They focused on removing valuable materials like pipes and metal fittings.
Looting: People were seen taking away books, iron rods, and other items from the building [9]. Among the items taken were books by and on Sheikh Mujib and his family members.
Other Properties Targeted: Sudha Sadan, the residence of Hasina's late husband, Dr. MA Wazed Miah, was also set on fire. Additionally, the Sheikh Bari, the home of Hasina's cousins in Khulna City, was demolished

Sentiments Expressed:

Anti-Fascism:
Supporters of the demolition believe that destroying the building is necessary to reject fascism and prevent the revolution from being disrupted.
Removal of Autocratic Symbols: Many people expressed their desire to eliminate any remnants of the autocratic government.

Background:
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh, has become the subject of a personality cult, with his image and legacy heavily promoted by the Awami League government led by his daughter, Sheikh Hasina. Critics argue that this personality cult is used to justify authoritarianism and suppress political dissent.
