Delhi hopes Dhaka will address Hefazat's anti-Modi protests

India, on Friday, hoped that the Bangladesh would aptly address the challenges posed by protests spearheaded by Hefazat-e-Islam in Chittagong during Narendra Modi's recent visit to the neighbouring country.

Modi was in Bangladesh on March 26-27 to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of independence and the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

But the Indian PM's visit triggered violent protests in several parts of Bangladesh, leaving at least 12 people dead. In the city of Chittagong, the protests were led by Hefazat-e-Islam.

"As far as the violence is concerned, we have always been against fundamentalism and extremism. We are confident that the Bangladesh government will address the challenge," Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told the media in Delhi, according to a UNB report.

Even though Hefazat-e-Islam claims to be a "non-political" outfit, the group has gained prominence after the fall of Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh's largest Islamist political party.

Apparently making it clear that the protests by Hefazat-e-Islam would not cast any shadow on the amicable ties between India and Bangladesh, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, "Modi's visit to Bangladesh had facilitated significant decisions to reinforce the legacy of 1971 and this is in furtherance of India-Bangladesh bilateral cooperation."

Ahead of his two-day visit to Dhaka, Modi tweeted: "Our partnership with Bangladesh is an important pillar of our Neighbourhood First policy, and we are committed to further deepen and diversify it. We will continue to support Bangladesh's remarkable development journey, under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's dynamic leadership."

Bangladeshis feel vindicated that Godi media is wrong and they were always right.

Indian products should be boycotted and the less Indian govt. poke its nose into Bangladesh affairs, the better it is.

As long as Hindutvabadis got the message to buzz off, Bangladeshis are happy.

Bangladeshis don't need Indian Govt. for anything.

Walaikum Tafat.

Aren't these the same guys who were after boycotting Bengali new year celebrations? The name is apt, just hefazat e islam not hefazat e bangladesh.

How is it fair to have us in Bangladesh dance to alien Hindu-ani rituals that Indians have been trying to culturally impose on us since 1947?

The latest is Hasina's cabinet adopting the Hindu ritual of lighting dia's (oil lamps) for inaugurating symposia and dressing ministers in Uttario (embroidered skinny shawls). What's next - dhoti and mongol sutra ??

Friggin' stop pushing these crap, unless you want Hefazat type riots again. Don't push your luck Indians.

Be happy with just exploiting us as a big market.

@Atlas bhai didn't they depict the Sheikh as Sri Krishna? This is effing hilarious.... :omghaha:

These pseudo Muslim Hasina Cabinet people (closet atheists I'm pretty sure) are outwardly more Hindu than Hindus themselves....

What Muslim rituals have Indian Hindus adopted lately?

Go on - name a few....

I bet even Shekhar Gupta couldn't name any if asked.

Lol if you have problems with Bengali new year better stop calling yourselves bengalis, stop using the script and the language and adopt urdu or arabic, i know many in bd will prefer this, in some other thread someone was saying to use bd zindabad and not joy bangla, some claim to be arabs from sylhet. No need of living on the fence and fooling the world with a name like Bangladesh if you can't accept bangali culture.

We in Bangladesh decide what we call ourselves, what script we use and how we teach our children.

Outsiders (especially Indians) have no right to judge this and their comments are irrelevant.

We gave blood and lives for our language, how many ounces did WB give? Almost all signboards in Kolkata are now in Friggin' Hindi. Stores are owned by Marwaris and Gujaratis.

One thing we Bangladeshis don't do well is kiss rear ends, especially of cow belters. Sorry to disappoint.
