The defence ministry is geared up to host leading arms companies of the world, which will be in New Delhi next month to find buyers for their weapons and systems.

Around the same time, representatives of the navies from 16 nations will be taking part in the Milan exercise in Port Blair.

The biennial Defexpo, the biggest arms fair in this part of the world, has attracted major participation even though the Indian armed forces, the largest buyers, have already finalised some of the big-ticket purchases.

With the government getting into a lame duck mode as the elections are due in May this year, there is unlikely to be more new contracts

The arms fair is also taking place in the backdrop of a crash crunch being faced by the defence ministry because of the economic downturn.

Meanwhile, far away in Port Blair, the table top exercise Milan is growing in stature as it has invoked great interest in the region.

The participation of 16 nations in Milan 2014 is a testimony to the fact that there is keen interest in engaging with the Indian Navy.

The participants are from neighbouring southeast Asian region and the focus is on humanitarian assistance during natural calamities.

The recent cyclones in Orissa and the Philippines required intervention on a massive scale.
