ISLAMABAD (February 15 2009): The Federal government is planning to give autonomous status to the defence production units of the country to allow them to go in international market and compete developed countries, said Minister for Defence Production Abdul Qayum Jatoi here on Saturday.

"The autonomous status is imperative for these units to enhance commercial production as well as gearing up the exports of these units," he said during his visit to Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF), Wah. He was given a detailed briefing on the working of the ordnance factories.

He said that the Ministry of Defence Production would raise the issue of granting autonomous status to defence production units with the President and Prime Minister so that these units could be able to make their valuable contributions in the economic well being of the country.

Jatoi lauded the performance of these units, saying that these units had a great role in strengthening the economy of the country. "We will make all out efforts to remove the bottlenecks on their way to go for commercial production and exports," he added.

He pointed out that the exports of the defence production units could be enhanced through various efforts like posting of special staff in the missions abroad. The Minister said that the government was making all out efforts to improve the economy of the country for the betterment of the common man. "All these efforts are in the offing in the light of the vision given by the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, who laid her life for this cause," he added.

The Minister was taken round different units of the factories where weapons and ammunition are being manufactured by the flagship organisation of the defence production sector. He witnessed the quality and standard of the work being carried out to produce state-of-the-art weaponry and ammo.

POF Chairman Lieutenant General Syed Sabahat Hussain welcomed the Minister, while Director, Exports of the factories, gave detailed briefing about progress and performance of the factories. He was told that the POF during the current year had so far procured export orders worth 60 million dollars, which was almost double of the previous year's earnings.

This progress had been achieved after hectic efforts spanned over almost seven years when the organisation's total export volume was seven million dollars, he said. Later, the Minister also visited 500-bed POF Hospital where modern machinery and equipment had been installed to provide quality healthcare to the inhabitants of the area and surroundings.
