ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said his announcement of awarding citizenship to Bengali and Afghan refugees is open for a parliamentary debate, ARY News reported.

During his speech in the National Assembly session, the PM maintained that no international law allows any country to forcibly repatriate refugees while children born in a particular country are naturally considered citizens of that country worldwide.

Bengali refugees, for instance, are here (in Pakistan) for more than 40 years and generations have spent their lives here without basic rights, when are we going to take a final decision regarding their future?,” asked the PM.

The premier maintained that during his visit to Karachi, he was told that these refugees, deprived of basic rights, are turning towards crime.

He implored the NA to think of refugees like fellow human beings not aliens.

As Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Nafisa Shah objected upon his announcement, the PM clarified that no final decision has been taken in this regard and the decision is open for debate.

“I invite you to give suggestions on this matter and it is open for debate but my question remains: when, if not today?,” said the PM.

In his maiden visit to Karachi on Sunday, Prime Minister Imran Khan hand announced that Afghans and Bengalis living in the country for many decades would be issued National Identity Cards and passports, which would effectively make them formal citizens of Pakistan.

The announcement has since been criticised by opposition leaders across the country.

Too much credit given to opposition it was internal party pressure that forced him to change it from a position to a suggestion

Being vocal on wrong moves is pre requisite of a functional democracy

But the question is what should be done now? Citizenship is out of question. So only option left is afghanis going back. PTI need to work on that instead of giving false hopes.

Do what was done in kpk in last five years make Pakistan living hell for them and smoke them out

Khan's bani gala palace is pretty big. I'm sure he can accommodate some thousand namak harams there very easily.
Kpk treated Afghanis in the worst way possible this statement was a surprise glad it got reversed

I am ok with Bengalis, reason being because they were once Pakistanis and chose to continue being Pakistanis rather than begalis. They should not pay the price of being loyal. Besides we have seen what happened to all those bengalis that were loyal to Pakistan in Bangladesh.
As for Afghans, I am all for kicking them out and mining the border. They are namak haram and should have no place inside Pakistan.
Good that PM has decided to put this for debate rather than making a hasty decision on his own.

This is exactly I have been saying that no decision has been taken rather he expressed his wish and now it will be discussed and debated in the parliament but our stunted growth went berserk like a 3 years old kid after someone snatched the toys from it.

This is how democracy works. Perhaps you people are not used to it because until now it was all civilian dictatorship and muka-muka ugly jamhoriyat where his lowness the god father would decide the fate of the country alone. In a true parliamentary democracy all major decisions are taken through consensus or majority of votes.

What a u-turn guy. Lel
So what did you wanted? He should stick make this a decision and tell everyone to F off?
maybe you are not use to how democracy works but actually this is how its suppose to work and not like making decisions in raiwand and UK and enforcing them over the whole country without any debate. Case in point when it was done to extend Afghan stay by Nawaz while sitting in UK. Hope you learn to appreciate the good thing.

Making such big decisions without consulting his cabinet & taking the issue in Parliament first is what annoyed me the most.

First of all it was never a decision. Had this been a decision than it would not had been put up for debate. PTI having simple majority could easily get it approved. But that is not the case.
