Philippine police officers investigate after an explosion at a night market that has left about 10 people dead and wounded several others in southern Davao city, Philippines late Friday.

An explosion has hit a night market in the hometown of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, killing at least 10 people and injuring many more, according to local officials. The blast hit Davao City on Friday, as Duterte was in town for a visit.

Dozens of people were wounded, according to news reports.

The explosion apparently struck shortly after 10 p.m. local time, and police were working to determine what caused it, though they suspect it was a bomb.

"There are at least 10 people who perished because of the incident and a number were reported wounded," Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte wrote in a statement published to Facebook. He added, "Rest assured the authorities are on top of this incident."

There's no sign yet of "who is behind this," the vice mayor said.

He concluded, "It's a sad day for Davao and for the Philippines."

Paolo Duterte is the son of the Philippine president. He tells GMA News Online that his father was monitoring the situation at the Davao City police station.

UPDATE: At least ten were reported dead due to the explosion. Duterte is already at the Roxas Night Market.

"The explosion happened at around 10:20 PM tonight," reports Atenews, the student news agency at Ateneo de Davao University, which is across the street from the blast's location on Roxas Street.

Atenews also posted photos from the scene that show police and emergency teams tending to the wounded. In the background, tents and kiosks are still standing.

It looks like somebody sent a clear message to Philippines Government that any kinda negotiations with China on south China sea will be devastating for the peace and prosperity in Philippines. But who could that be? Guys help me out in here please.

I agree....I have no idea about region. But president of Philippines did say :-

“It is just an issue between the Philippines and China. I will not (raise it at the Asean meeting) because I do not want any clutters there,” he said at the inauguration of an international port in his home province of Davao.

Other than foreign policy (e.g. political relation with China, US), another possible motive may stem from domestic conflict of interests related to drugs. Let's see how this unfold.

It could be the ASG as the PH govt. intensified military operations against them, or some politician-protected drug lord as they are targeted by the police.

. . . . .
The stupidest thing the Abu Sayyaf could do is to bomb the home city of Duterte.
