Cyclone Nilofar to Make Landfall on Saturday, Gujarat Preparing for Evacuations: 10 Developments
New Delhi: Cyclone Nilofar, now a very severe cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea, is expected to make landfall on west coast of Gujarat on the forenoon of Saturday, November 1. It is expected to pass near Goa in the next one day.
Following are the latest developments in the story:
- Cyclone Nilofar is expected to hit coast with much less intensity than Cyclone Hudhud, which made landfall in the Andhra Pradesh port town of Vishakhapatnam on October 12.
- Nilofar has a wind speed gusting to about 155 kmph right now, but is expected to lose strength by the time it hits coast. The Met department said it would make landfall with wind speeds at about 100 kmph.
- The Met department has predicted heavy rain in the Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat on Friday, when sea conditions will also become very rough.
- It will pass by Goa soon as it heads towards Gujarat and the Goa administration has set up control rooms for any emergencies. The cyclone has caused unseasonal rain in Goa.
- When Cyclone Nilofer hits land, it could damage huts with thatched roofs, trees and some power and communication lines, the Met department has warned. Fishermen have been asked to return to coast.
- Cyclone Nilofer will also impact Pakistan's coast. This morning, it was 1120 km away from Naliya village in Gujarat and 1160 km from Karachi in Pakistan.
- Gujarat is preparing to evacuate those who live close to the coast. Officials said people would be shifted to safer places from today.
- The National Disaster Response Force has been put on alert in Gujarat, and Chief Minister Anandiben Patel held a high-level meeting on Monday to take stock of the situation.
- "While we are preparing for the worst to happen, let us also pray that cyclone Nilofar gets subdued and doesn't bring serious damage," the chief minister said.
- Cyclone Hudhud ravaged Vizag in Andhra Pradesh. Most of the power and telephone lines here were knocked out; the roof of the airport was ripped off and blown away. At least 40 people died due to Hudhud.
