CRPF asks govt to replace Insas guns with AK rifles

Guns are guns. CRPF are also trained soldiers.

IA is not in any active conflict. Most LoC firing done by short range artillery like mortars and only HMG's used. So maybe INSAS has not revealed its deficiency to IA as yet.

CRPF is in active conflict with Naxals. So more opportunities to test the guns out.

Sir its useless to explains army fans anything which is against army. Since army uses it therefore it is best rifle.

Many here are questioning maintenance standard of rifles by CRPF. No idiot would have ever seen how weapon is maintained but they know everything from their home in front of their computer.

Every Thursday is maintainence day is most of armed forces. Dedicated specifically for weapon cleaning and maintainence.

Weapon is kept back in kote only after inspection clearance from Armourer. Also Inspection takes place every time, before and after firing from weapon.

Smallest defect in weapon lead to Court of Inquiry against person on whose name weapon is issued.

Lot many things are done for maintainence are weapons. It is actually considered sacred power which saves our life.

But Army fans don't leave a chance to defame CRPF. Because everybody here knows CRPF is doing for this nation, unlike others who are looting defence budget of this nation sitting idle and using media PR to get credit for everything.

Just leave these idiots sir. Most of them don't know a sh*t about firearms, basically they are nothing but chairborne soldiers who like to pass opinions sitting behind their computer screen.I bet most of them have never even fired an Ishapore 2A1 rifle and still they are making comments on matters that are way beyond their heads.Btw we recently heard that the Armed Forces have cleared an OFB made Desi AK-Series clone for mass production. So is there any chance that the CRPF might order s few of them or are you guys satisfied with the Bulgarian made AK series A.R.s??

You are right mike, but it really hurts sometime when I see some senior member even, demeaning CRPF for no reasons and they call them defence experts.
If you will see the budget difference you will be astonished. You will wonder that how is it possible that entire paramilitary having same number of personnel about army is allocated several times less budget but still they are performing their duties so well and brining laurels in form of gallantary award.

Btw on topic, I am not exactly sure that whether CRPF will chose OFB's AK copy. Had it been license production they would have certainly gone for it. Also Bulgarian Ak is dirt cheap with satisfactory quality, priced only Rs 6000 per weapon. Have used it personally, I would say its good weapon.
Personal weapon is something, on which, no soilder wants to take any chance.

INSAS is pathetic. There is absolutely no debate here.

It is a rifle which is too heavy, can carry only 20 rounds (5.56 mm), cannot fire full-auto in emergency, has no pica-tinny rails more modern optics and has major issues with ergonomics.

Indian army is 980,000 and I doubt CRPF numbers that much. Also bear in mind that army has to induct and maintain mortars, radar, artillery, aircraft, tanks, infantry combat vehicles, engineering vehicles, MRAP vehicles, countless trucks etc. The CRPF on the other hand has the 82mm mortar as the heaviest weapon.

There is so much misinformation and BS on those six pages, I dont even know where to start :hitwall:

Sorry to burst your bubble but the Indian Army hasaround 11,80,000 soldiers and officers.Similarly the CRPF has around 290,000 men and the entire Central Armed Police Forces excluding the Railway Protection Force have around 8,60,000 officers and men as of December,2013.

Press Trust of India
New Delhi, 4 May
CRPF, which is deployed for anti- Maoist operations, has decided to shun its
standard weapon of combat, the indigenous INSAS rifle, and henceforth arm its troops exclusively with the AK series of assault rifles.
The force has also sought to procure 20,000 new AK series rifles for its troops, deployed in the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas in various states and counter-insurgency theatres in the North-East
.The force has discovered that the INSAS rifle not as “operationally suitable” as the Russian made AK-47 and AK-56 series of combat rifles.
The country's largest paramilitary force, with its three lakh personnel, is now planning to reduce the numbers of INSAS rifles in its armoury as a technical and scientific comparison between the INSAS and the sophisticated AK rifles has hailed the latter as more effective.
Field commanders of the force deployed in the anti-Maoist operations grid said they were frequently sending
the INSAS to the weapon repair store of the force.
The Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) rifle has been the primary weapon of the force for a number of years now and it is even relied upon by the Indian Army for use by its troops in various combat scenarios.
The INSAS was developed for the first time in the late 80s by the Ordnance Factories Board (OFB) for aiding the Indian infantry forces.
“INSAS was never the preferred weapon for us in operational areas like in the Left Wing Extremism theatre.”
“We have found that our men are more confident with the AK series rifles,” Central Reserve Police Force chief, Dilip Trivedi told reporters.
However, the Director General said that INSAS would continue to remain in the force as CRPF has a multi-faceted role in the internal security domain of the country including dealing with law and order problems and dealing with the conduct of elections.
Force commanders on the ground said
that while the AK series of rifles rarely needed repairs or
overhauling, the INSAS was being sent “quite often” to the repairing table.
Officials said, however, there was no instances where the INSAS had failed to operate during a live encounter or an operation.
There have been occasions when the troops have demanded that they be supplied with AK rifles only for combat tasks as they have found them 'dependable' during their drills and hence are more confident using them during real combat situation.
The CRPF has been extensively deployed for anti-Naxal operations across various Maoist affected states.
By the last count, over 90,000 troops of the force, including the specialised COBRA combat unit, trained in guerrilla warfare based on specific intelligence inputs, have been
permanently deployed for these duties.
The force's inclination to the AK rifles, can be gauged from the fact that it has also decided to cancel any future procurement of the Israel made 'X-95' rifle, touted to be more
sophisticated and smarter than the AK rifles.
Before blindly hating INSAS,one should read the above article. CRPF needs Kalanishkovs due to the inherent advantages of the Kalanishkovs, which makes it the best rifle in the world. They are prefered over the Tavours too. INSAS isn't a bad rifle, the Kalanishkovs are simply too good.

That 11,80,000 is total army+air force+navy combined number. The Indian army has roughly 400 battalions where each battalion comprises of 600 soldiers. That makes an infantry of 240,000 troops and the rest are supporting like armour, artillery, aviation, administration, medics, engineers etc. Everybody in the army is not a frontline soldier.

The Central armed police forces do not fall under CRPF if I am not mistaken, they have a separate chain of command. But for arguments sake lets agree that CRPF numbers 11,80,000 they are still not equipped to the level of the army.

INSAS would have been the best rifle for India if it was introduced in the late 70s or early 80s. In 2014 it is a museum piece.

The Design and the size of bullet is a very important factor for the type of operation. When it comes to convectional warfare smaller caliber bullets of INSAS will not kill the subject but will keep him out of the game, its a proven technique and is known to all major army that you need more men to care for the wounded solders... In case of terrorists, they just leave their mates... So A.K's larger caliber is a desired size for dealing with terrorists.....

nice id:D

And the basis for your claim is?

The first basis would be the army's vocal opposition to the INSAS since its induction. Second would be the army going for Tavor over the INSAS. Third would be the army floating a tender for a new rifle which has no mention of INSAS.

Compare the weight of the INSAS with other rifles of same calibre. An American M14 carbine, the standard issue holds a 30 round magazine, can go full auto, has the capability to mount scopes and weighs almost 1kg less than INSAS. INSAS can carry only 20 round mag, cannot go full auto, cannot mount the modern reflex sights and its empty weight is the same as an M14 loaded.

There are way too many problems with the INSAS. Why do you think the Tavor is fast replacing INSAS in Kashmir? Even the CRPF guys are dumping INSAS in the valley in favor of Tavor.
