The Pakistan Army has started court martial proceedings against five officers over suspected ties to a banned extremist group that has called for ousting the government, security officials said on Saturday.

Brig Ali Khan and four other officers were detained in May, 2011 for suspected links to Hizbut Tahrir. Brig Khan was working at the army’s headquarters in Rawalpindi at the time of his arrest.

His family has denied the allegations against him.

Two senior security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the military trial started recently but did not provide any other details. It was also not clear where the trial is taking place and what punishment the officers face, if convicted.Brig Khan’s lawyer, Col (retd) Inam Rahim, said after the arrest that his client was detained for demanding that someone within the military be held accountable for the covert US Navy SEALs raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad.

Hizbut Tahrir is banned in Pakistan because of its extremist propaganda. The group also works to re-establish the caliphate system and campaigns in Pakistan against its alliance with the Unites States in the war on terror. The group insists it has rejected violence, although observers say it promotes an intolerant mindset that can ultimately lead some followers to embrace militancy.

Western officials have long suspected some Pakistani military officials of having ties to Islamist groups.

oh there is an interesting twist in this issue...

father of this brig has written a letter to defence secretary Nargis Sethi that he fears his son will be persecuted without giving him proper defence, and moreover that his son is being made victim of something he has not done, asking the Defence Secretary Nargis Sethi (a seasoned Bureaucrat, first neutral civilian to hold the position) to intervene in the matter...

If the news didnt die, consider it another horn locked tussle in civil-military relation.

How is this going to get into a civil-military tussle?

It is a internal court-martial of a serving officer within the military, what has the civilian setup got to do?

What is the problem with the civilian government?

Let's wait what the court-martial finds out.

The Brig was being kicked out of the army, but wanted a Court-Martial and requested that he not be kicked out but a court-martial take place.

what happens in other countries do they make case details public of court marshal or the matter stays with the military ??

In Pakistan, within the military, in other countries, some do, some don't, really broad term you used there, depends on the case as well.

Nobody gives two hoots if a sergeant gets court-martialled for a breach of discipline or anything, but a senior officer case could get publicized.

Although Chogy or somebody can give a more detailed view about the US system.

And Why exactly is this thread in careers section ??

Thread Moved.

Excellent, HT is a dangerous organization that breeds and propagates intolerance,

I don't see why he is being court Marshaled , perhaps I misread it he "demanded that something be done for the violation of Pakistan sovereignty by US unilateral action"

So - where is the case , whole Pakistan demanded answers after that raid ?

I say he should be released and allowed to do his good work for Nation

But if he , provided material support to elements against Pakistan that is another story

I hope that common sense prevails in this case - every solider is trained to "REACT" to events against his nation and by that analogy- his actions were in line with his solider training , meaning the training worked. He wanted to ask questions about failures

When its written in military code of conduct , no preaching or affiliation with any type of organization during serving tenure ,its Senior officer to obey the code of conduct .
Obey the law or go to hell and face the consequences.
Good job Pak army, keep the discipline at highest level.
