This is the research and development spending of nations by their GDP per capita spending.

You will notice here certain trends. Israel spends the largest percentage of its GDP at research which is why it is so far ahead in this field. In 2011 it was 4.2% of their GDP. On contrary Indonesia and Saudi Arabia spent onlt 0.08% of their GDP (PPP) on research and development (in 2009) which was one of the lowest in the world. Tajikistan spent 0.09% of their GDP on research in the same year. Pakistan fared relatively better spending .46% of its GDP on indigenous research and development. Iran spent .7% higher than any other Islamic state and is the only Muslim country to have reached 2% even. Might explain why Muslim countries have no internal development power of indigenous weapons.

By amount US was on top spending $405.3 Billion and China came at a second with $220 Billion and Japan with $160.3 Billion.

Why waste money on R&D?

After all the first thing Pakistani's do when they make money is to buy a spanking new BMW, Mercedes or Porsche. Acquisition of BMW's, Mercedes S Class and Land Cruisers is much more important for our Ministers and MP's than wasting money on education and R&D. Lets take the easy shortcut way which our politicians and businessman do, import import import instead of spending money on local manufacturing.

Thanks for the information. It has fluctuated heavily over time-the R&D spending. But on average compared to Israel and the western world it has remained very low. Even 1% is about half as much as the western world spends and a quarter of what Israel spends. They have the Uzi-we have sticks and stones which we use on our own property the moment someone in US burns the Quran.

I just wanted to provide the core reasons for it though there are other core issues like poverty issues in these nations which lead to low R&D spending as other important projects take up the costs. Deep thanks my Tunisian friend. Deep thanks.

There is more to it...
R&D spending in private sector can increase if they are given a shelter from foreign competitors...
We all remember 1980s proficient car and how they went bust due to foreign car manufacturers in Pakistan.

Actually the R&D spending is kept secret as lot of R&D goes into defense related research.

India spends about 1% of gdp on and about 55bill$ on R&D. This is not even a fraction of our potential. We are 7th in the world, we should be no3 in the world at the end of the decade.

so it was 0.9% in 2009 and was projected to be about 1.2% by 2012....we must spend close to 2% hope we will achieve that.
