well the idea of 3 platforms before 5th generation do not makes much sense either.,, i mean what are the supposed benefits that it will give us??? Specially considering the time line by which we can start getting J-31. Considering that, a fifth generation plane along with future JF-17 blks and a few F-16 are a much more better solution. Both in procurement and also keeping them operation. Inducting a third platform will just increase the operations costs. Upgrading and keeping the evolution of JF-17 MUST be the priority, for next step, we can go for fifth generation then.

It make sense when one is a light fighter and the other medium wt fighter is sanctionable/ no codes and less in numbers. J31 if and when [after a decade] becomes operational will not replace old fighters/unit

I agree with the Part that we cannot afford 5th generation in large numbers so the 4 and 4.5 generations will form an integral part of PAF in next few decades but the point is why go for ANOTHER platform, specially considering the interest PAF have shown in JF-17. I think it will be more about further developing JF-17 and some MoUs regarding J-31 and that, for me, will be a better way forward. Let us see what our policy makers think

If some oil miracle happens or our economy improves drastically than we can work on J-31 as well as design new Jet with China may be try to come up with something similar to F-22 Raptor but still 3 4.5 Generations are must to counter entire Indian 4.5 Generation fleet

J-31 will not be available before 2020 as it will have to be mature before final production. Rafale will come to India in 2016. So Pakistan can't wait for J-31 as Year 2020 will not be fixed. J-10 started before 2005 and still moving to the upper level. I think that this is the best decision to procure J-10 due to its AESA radar, latest avionics, canards & engine power.

J-10 is now Impossible as PAF has plans to acquire some what 32+ Block-52s along with some more used F-16s Block-15s. Also there can be a contract of J-31s in near future.
