Continuous drone attacks show US' 'utter disrespect' for Pak and its parliament: Report

Islamabad, May 21(ANI): The Pakistan Parliament's unanimous resolutions of October 2008 and May 2011, demanding an immediate halt to US drone attacks, do not seem to be worth a penny for either nation.

Following the United States' unilateral military operation against Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden inside Pakistani territory, Pakistan's parliament threatened to withdraw the transit facility used by Afghan-bound NATO forces in case of continued US drone attacks in the country's tribal areas.

The May 14 resolution said that failure to end unilateral US raids and drone attacks will force Pakistan to "to consider taking necessary steps, including withdrawal of (the) transit facility" used by the NATO's International Security Assistance Force.

However, even after the resolution was adopted during a joint session of Pakistan parliament, neither the US has stopped the drone strikes inside Pakistan, nor has Islamabad done anything to effectively check the unending breach of its sovereignty, The News reports.

Friday's drone attack in North Waziristan, killing at least four persons, was the third such attack since the passage of the May 14 resolution and the 212th since the adoption of the unanimous resolution by parliament on October 23, 2008.

Almost 2,000 innocent people have been killed by US drone attacks since the passage of the 2008 resolution, but the will of parliament remains unimplemented. During the last six days and following the May 14 resolution, almost 20 innocents have been killed.

Ironically, such disrespect is shown to Pakistan and its parliament by Washington that within a few hours of the adoption of the October 2008 resolution, a drone attack was carried out, the paper said. The May 14 resolution was only 24 hours old when the US carried out two drone strikes in Mir Ali region of North Waziristan.

While the US authorities remain arrogant, the Pakistani authorities- both civilian and military- have kept mum on these strikes, the paper said.

Some Pakistani officials even fed the media with distorted information, including the claim that Washington had formally tendered an apology to Pakistan over the May 15 attack.

Not only the reported apology was never confirmed by any quarter in Islamabad or Washington, the Pakistani authorities also avoided formal censure and protest against the drone strikes in the past six days. (ANI)
