Turkish classified documents from June 2014 detailing a military contingency plan for invasion of Greece and Armenia have been revealed in recent days. The plan was prepared by the Turkish Army Operational Planning Division. The documents went through a round of certification at Turkish General Staff in 2016 via secure e-mail, and were approved as an operational plan by the Turkish Chief of Staff in February 2017. The documents were collected from the Ankara General Staff in an investigation conducted against senior officers of the General Staff, suspected of conspiracy to commit military coup 2016. It appears that the prosecutor who headed the investigation, Sardar Kushkun - who is known as trustee of President Erdogan and his regime - mistakenly filed them along with other documents.
The classified plan was presented to the General Staff as a contingency plan, which will be implemented in response to events that may develop in Syria, with the aim of allowing Turkish forces to move into Syria while other forces produce deterrence and containment of Western forces. The program is called Cheka Bay, named after the Turkish Admiral who led the military campaign against Greece in the 11th century, when the ancient Turkish empire took over many islands, and is regarded as the founder of the Turkish Navy and its ancient legacy is still preserved in the country's navy. Erdogan's regime, and in particular the current Speaker of the Parliament and the Prime Minister and former Minister of Naval Affairs, Binali Yildirim, are promoting the legacy of the mythical admiral and organizing many cultural activities to commemorate it.
The Erdogan government began making war statements against Greece in 2013, near the opening of investigations into the corruption of the leader, his family, and of politicians and close associates. The purpose of the statements was to divert public attention from the investigations. But over the last few months, the magnitude of the threats against Greece, voiced by various Turkish officials and especially by the Minister of Defense, has intensified. The two countries, members of the NATO alliance, are in deep conflict due to heavy disagreements over the division of maritime territory between the countries in the Aegean Sea, where Greek-controlled islands are adjacent to Turkey's territorial waters. The conflict between the countries is about the economic water rights in the islands. In late 2019, Turkey signed an agreement with the Provisional Government in Libya under which the territorial water rights between Libya and Turkey were transferred to Turkey - including a maritime territory controlled by Greece. Turkey declared this maritime corridor between Libya and its economic waters without its permission and support. And contrary to the positions of Greece, Cyprus and Egypt.
Turkey's political and military conduct in the Mediterranean and the Aegean over the past year, including its consolidation in Libya, Yemen and Syria, its military operations at sea and land in the eastern Mediterranean basin, and the discovery of the classified documents on the invasion plan to Greece and Armenia - all reinforce its speculation and evidence To realize the vision of the "Blue Homeland" (Mavi Vatan) with military force.
