Commander says Taliban cannot win war: report

one week a US or NATO commander will come out with some statement about how they cannot win Afghanistan and people will go all out expressing their endless wisdom

a week later a totally different statement about how stable has Afghanistan become and same people start arguing in favor of it.

on a side note, I havent been here for 2 days and forgot India's GDP, GNP, foreign exchange and all related economic numbers, can someone refresh my memory

I totally agree with that statement but you see the thing is,you don't need to beat a superpower,you just need to make it bleed.

If there was i would say U.S was on the losing side.

I would say the Taliban is on the losing side because the Afghan govt. is here to stay for many decades to come. Mullah Omar would be dead by age if not killed by the ISAF. Just like in Iraq, American troops are gone but the insurgents are still dying in Iraq fighting the Iraqi govt. The Taliban knows they don't have much time and probably wants political solution. Surely they would wait it out and not negotiate at all.

"Winning" a war used to mean completely destroying the enemy's army and production facilities.
No way in hell can some rag tag army accomplish that. The best they can do is to make the US reconsider the effort and pull out.

But Afghanis fight a war of ATTRITION in which the ENEMY ends up defeating itself by giving up because of the huge costs. In this sense Taliban will be the WINNERS ultimately because they are prepared to fight for centuries.

Well that is not really winning is it? In sense of quality of life. Whether the US wins or loses it's citizens will still maintain their high standard of living, whereas the Afghans will go back into tribal warfare and dependency on aid. They have no resources, nor do they produce anything.
Even Russia which supposedly "lost". Always had a far better quality of life.

So really these terms mean nothing in the long run.

Something we all knew since the beginning . Pakistani cheer leaders will not believe this of course . Taliban coming back to power like in the 90s is impossible now .

If Taliban does not manage to come to power in Afghanistan like it was from 1996-2001 ,It will be essentially a defeat for them .A compromise on anything less than that would also be considered a defeat .

By this benchmark there is no way Taliban is going to win this war , this has been clear to most reasonable people since 2001.
