COMAC jumbo jet and its global rivals


The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) started developing China's own long-range passenger aircraft to break off from the long-term monopoly of Boeing and Airbus. The project has filled the absence of China's own long-range passenger aircraft in civil aviation. The C919, a jumbo jet, has received some 400 orders. The following is a description of the C919 and its main competitors.



China's jumbo jet project takes priority in developing single-aisle narrow-body passenger jet capable of accommodating between 150 and 200 seats, depending on different cabin configurations. The C919 debut targets this market that is seemingly less competitive from Boeing and Airbus.


This year, COMAC has finished building the front and middle segments of the C919's prototype, along with the plane's center wings and ailerons. The first prototype of the C919 will be assembled later this year to prepare for its first flight in 2015.


As of the end of July, 2014, the C919 has received some 400 orders, almost reaching break-even point.


Much expectation has been given to the C919 since day one of the project. But its research and development team has kept a low profile. Ask about when China's jumbo jet could catch up with Boeing and Airbus, COMAC vice general manager said: "Ideally 20 years from now."


Albeit enjoying the reputation as the most successful civil aviation passenger jet, Boeing 737 is also the type of aircraft that suffered the most crashes.

now you said Global Rivals are you talking about the Comac-919 and planes in the same class or the company in general? you list a Boeing 737.

it looks more like it would be competing against Embrarer and Bombardier
even Russia is trying to get a slice of the pie, but now I wonder if that's in jeopardy

we aren't all Chinese so it would confuse some if you refer C919 as "Jumbo"
I personally don't care call it what you want.

[Avionics Today 09-04-2014] Airlines and operators based in China are projected to require 6,020 new aircraft worth $870 billion over the next two decades, according to the latest annual China Current Market Outlook (CMO) from Boeing. The world's largest commercial airframe manufacturer has already received 13 percent more orders from China through the first eight months of 2014 than all of last year. This equals to 260 aircraft ordered so far in 2014, compared to 230 for all of last year, said Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing for Boeing's commercial aircraft division, during a press conference in Beijing. The latest 20-year outlook for China is 8 percent higher than the forecast released by Boeing in 2013.

"China's aviation market is going through dynamic changes," said Tinseth. "New business models like low-cost carriers and airplane leasing companies, a new generation of fuel-efficient airplanes, and evolving consumer needs are driving demand for more direct flights to more destinations."

Boeing expects the biggest demand in China will be for single-aisle 90-230 seat passenger jets, representing nearly half of the overall projected demand with 4,340 deliveries expected. That should provide a healthy market for the 737 MAX and the 777X, both of which Boeing expects to enter into service within the next five years.

Currently, Boeing manufactures more than 50 percent of in-service aircraft in China. However, Airbus will pose significant competition with the re-engined version of its A320 passenger jet coming into the market at the end of 2015.

The increased demand from China will result not only from the emergence of new low-cost and regional carriers as Tinseth mentioned, but also from the projected growth in Asian air travel. According to an Oxford Economics report released earlier this year, China will surpass the United States in 2014 as the world's largest outbound travel market and will also become the biggest domestic air travel market by 2017. That should help to establish a healthy market for newer wide body jets in China, such as Boeing's 777X and 787 Dreamliner, as well as the A330neo and A350 XWB from rival Airbus.

"To compete in the tough long-haul international market, our Chinese customers are focused on evolving new business models, adding new destinations, [and] increasing their capacity and resources," said Tinseth. "These trends will shape market demand for an airplane lineup that has high efficiency, low operating costs, environmentally progressive technologies and a great passenger experience."

Vietnamese don't have just jumbo jets.

They have megajets.

Chinese planes are mere paper airplanes to them.

Vietnamese are so great, well known for high achieving academics in Japan and being richer than average in the US.

The C919 is mainly designed for the domestic and near-Asian markets and the primary objective is to achieve home market domination. This narrow body aircraft may perfectly meet such requirements.

It is a learning curve and, with home market domination and enough cash to burn on R&D, COMAC can already become a potential rival to international manufacturers. Keep in mind that China still keeps its domestic airspace closed because:

a. It prioritizes HSR development

b. It does not want a demand explosion by domestic airliners for foreign aircraft to meet the domestic passenger demand.

Once the C919 is ready, then, you will see domestic lines to expand and improve dramatically.

Alas, maybe not the best craft ever produced, but, better than just sitting idly and giving orders to foreign manufacturers.

This is the basic difference between China and the many others.
