CHENNAI/KOCHI: A Dornier aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard which went missing with three crew members on board on Monday night off Chennai coast was yet to be traced, said Indian Navy sources.
The Indian Navy, Coast Guard and Tamil Nadu Coast Security Group have launched a massive search and rescue operation (SAR) for the Dornier.
Sources said the crew consisted of two pilots and one observer and all of them were highly experienced. One of the pilots is rated 'master green' the highest proficiency qualification.
A press brief released by the Indian Coast Guard said, "All available surface and aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy, six Coast Guard ships, four Naval ships along with long range maritime surveillance aircraft P-81 are undertaking the SAR operation." The fishing communities along the Chennai coast have been alerted about the incident. They have been asked to inform the ICG if they spot the aircraft. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) declared it missing at 6 am on Tuesday.

Ministry of Defence spokesperson Sitanshu Kar tweeted that the missing aircraft that was the latest induction in the ICG was being flown by experienced crew. The aircraft was on a routine sortie when it lost contact with air traffic control (ATC) at around 10 pm on Monday. The aircraft was supposed to return to the Chennai base at 10pm. The aircraft was last tracked at 10pm at Trichy airport radar. It disappeared north-east off Karaikal coast.
In March, a Dornier belonging to the Navy had crashed off Goa coast, killing two officers Lieutenant Abhinav Nagori and Lt Kiran Shekhawat on board. The pilot, Commander Nikhil Kuldip Joshi, was rescued by fishermen.
